      Hi Everyone!

Saturday October 9th is Open House at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory!

Here's your opportunity to find out exactly what goes on at this
world renowned earth science research facility and graduate school
nestled between Snedens Landing and the Palisades Interstate Park on
50 acres atop the Palisades ridge.

There'll be plenty of exercise for your brain and body as you walk
the grounds from building to building, display table to display
table, participate in walking tours, hikes, a Field Geology
Challenge, attend lectures and demonstrations or converse with
scientists in the top of their fields about their past, present, and
      future research.

Lots of stuff for the kids too.

Open House happens once each year.

Just a few of the attractions:

Hiking Tour: The History of Eastern US Tree-Ring Analysis
Aspects of forest ecology, climate change and tree-ring analysis in
the Eastern US will be discussed. The primary goal of the hike is to
introduce you to our outdoor laboratory, the forest, and how we use
      trees to study environmental history.

      Hudson River Research
Explore highlights of LDEO's ongoing research on the Hudson River.
Learn what is an estuary and how it works- making your own "mini"
estuary. Examine recently completed maps of the river bottom showing
differing sedimentary environments. See how contaminants would spread
in the estuary. Examine core samples from the Hudson that reveal
changes in salinity levels, impacts of the brick industry, and surges
      in oyster colonies.

Global Disaster Hotspots: Managing Natural Disaster Risks
      Global Studies and Local Examples
Earthquakes, floods, landslides, severe storms and other natural
hazards cause massive disruptions. Scientists have analyzed historic
records of natural hazards and have identified the regions and
countries most at risk. This information can be used to design
effective natural hazard risk management strategies and prioritize
      their application throughout the world.
