MOX program a pig in a poke

      The State (SC)

      Friday letters:

      July 19, 2013

Columbia, SC Sen. Lindsey Graham regularly says government is too big. He has a perfect opportunity right now to knock out several billion dollars in spending for a program all but the Georgia and South Carolina congressional delegations are rethinking: the MOX program at the Savannah River Site. The plan to make nuclear fuel from weapons-grade plutonium, authorized in 1999, has run into construction delays and cost overruns.

Caught on camera June 27 by WAGT news in Augusta, Sen. Graham said about MOX, “there’s no alternative to disposing of thirty-two metric tons of plutonium this way.” Surely he knows there is another and cheaper way, by encasing it in ceramic and glass. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., topped Graham’s remarks by saying, “There’s no other place in the country where two bordering states and all four senators say, ‘Bring your nuclear waste here.’” Indeed.

And no matter how generous contractors are with campaign contributions, congressional support won’t bring a customer to buy a faulty product. That is precisely the situation: Commercial reactor operators have turned it down.

I say no more pork from this pig.
