      In light of Rice University's renewed focus on civic engagement and
      student involvement in community-based research, the Assistant
      Director's responsibilities will be in a state of transition for the
      next year, as the Center for Civic Engagement is established. A
      heavy focus of the position, however, will continue to be with our
      literacy-based programs (including America Reads and an AmeriCorps
      Education Award Program) and Alternative Break experiences.

      Assistant Director of Community Involvement
      Rice University

      Position Purpose:
      To coordinate, maintain, and refine the programs, services, and
      resources offered by the Community Involvement Center, under the
      advisement of the Director. To support efforts of student leaders in
      community service. To advocate and promote community service and
      volunteerism to the Rice University community.

      Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
      1. Serves as a representative of the University, displaying
      courtesy, tact, consideration, and discretion in all interactions
      with other members of the Rice community and with the public. 2. Assist the
      Director in managing the general operations of the
      Community Involvement Center (CIC); represent the CIC to the campus
      and community; respond to appropriate requests from students,
      faculty, staff, and the external community; market and promote the
      CIC to the internal and external communities. (20%)
      3. Coordinate and attend the CIC's International Service Project and
      the Alternative Spring Break, including site location, student
      selection and training, budgeting, and fundraising. (20%)
      4. Coordinate literacy-focused efforts. Supervise the America Reads
      Tutoring Program; closely advise the campus English as a Second
      Language (ESL) Tutoring Program; advise and support the
      educationally-focused student service organizations; coordinate
      annual Literacy Awareness Week events; represent the CIC to local and
      national literacy organizations; organize tutor and mentor trainings.
      5. Coordinate and direct Urban Immersion, a week-long service
      intensive orientation to Houston's cultural and social issues,
      offered to incoming students during the summer. (15%)
      6. Hire and supervise CIC student work-study staff, including the
      America Reads Program Coordinator and oversee work-study project
      areas, including the CIC web page and the Resource Library. (15%) 7.
      Assist with student leadership and training programs, such as the
      CIC Service Council and student organization retreats. (5%)
      8. Perform other tasks and special projects as assigned by the
      Director, Executive Director of the Center for Civic Engagement, and
      the Dean of Undergraduates. (5%)

      Qualifications and Experience:
      Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree; experience
      coordinating campus service programs; experience advising student
      organizations; experience with service trips (domestic or
      international); a demonstrated commitment to student community
      service; strong organizational and communication skills, both written
      and oral; an ability to work autonomously as well as in a team; and
      an ability to maintain effective working relationships with Rice
      University students, faculty, staff, and community members.

      Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree in student
      personnel or a related field; experience coordinating campus-wide
      events; experience managing program budgets; experience advising or
      coordinating mentoring or tutoring programs; an ability to speak
      conversational Spanish; and experience with FileMaker Pro, Microsoft
      Office products, Dreamweaver (web editor), and PageMaker.

      The Community Involvement Center was established in 1995 as the
      center for community service programming at Rice University and
      strives to develop a culture of service within the University,
      advocating community service and social responsibility. The offices
      currently advises 13 student-run service organizations, including the
      Rice Student Volunteer Program (RSVP), established in 1985. The CIC
      offers an extensive database of volunteer opportunities; a volunteer
      and literacy resource library; a bi-weekly e-mail newsletter
      containing information on volunteer, internship, and employment
      opportunities; three Outreach Days per year; a volunteer and career
      fair; and several programs which involve students, faculty, and staff

      Application review begins immediately and continues until July 21,
      2006 with an anticipated start date of August 21, 2006. Hiring
      salary range $27,343 to $35,632 with an excellent benefits package.
