Dear J Michael:
Thank you for contacting me about funding for the Peace Corps. I appreciate you support for this program.
The United States Peace Corps initiatives for social and economic development across the world are critical. I believe the Peace Corps is a key tool for expanding our understanding with other cultures and vice versa. This especially hits close to home for many Texans – we are the third largest state with the highest number of Peace Corps volunteers.
As the Chairwoman of the State -Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee, I work with other Members of Congress to fund the State Department and various foreign assistance initiatives. The Peace Corps is one of the programs my subcommittee oversees funding for. On December 16, 2011 the House passed the final spending bill to fund federal agencies and programs for the rest of the 2012 fiscal year. You will be glad to know in my portion of the funding bill, the Peace Corps was fully funded at $375 million – this was $75,000 above FY11 levels. At a time when many government programs are getting scaled back or cut entirely, I thought you would be happy to hear the Peace Corps was not one of them.
Again, thank you for contacting me. Please continue to keep me informed on the issues that are important to you. For more information on my work in Congress, please feel free to visit the 12th District's web site, .
