NorCal Grants applications due July 31, 2005
- Hello fellow NorCal members and friends:
Since 1981, NorCal has provided support for domestic and international
projects from funds raised and donated. In 2004, we donated over $6,000 to seven
projects. Soon, the Grants Committee will be reviewing new proposals. We need
your help to identify and sponsor community development projects which meet
our criteria. The deadline for applications is July 31, 2005.
There is also time to make a personal donation to Grants Program.
In 2004, the NorCal Grants Program provided funds totaling $6,333 for the
following seven projects:
1. **$1,150 for the Bishop Stensera Vocational Training School (VTS) at
Bwanda, Masaka, Uganda, run by the Bannabikira Sisters, a Catholic order of
2. **$500 for the Misali Island Conservation Association (MICA) in Pemba,
Tanzania. MICA is a fisherman-based local community organization on the coast.
3. $500 for a street theater group in San Martin Jilotepeque, a municipality
of Chimaltenango, Guatemala.
4. **$2,183 to Familias Saludables on Roatan Island, Honduras. Familias
Saludables provides HIV tests and follow-up treatment to pregnant women in the
Bay Islands of Honduras.
5. **$1,000 for the Ha Village primary school construction in Thua-Thien Hue
Province, Vietnam. This 3 room school is an effort coordinated by the East
Meets West Foundation (EMWF), based in Oakland, California.
6. **$500 for the project called “Unidos: Building Homes, Building Hope”,
coordinated by Lynne Moquete, a NorCal member living in Petaluma, California.
7. $500 for Friends Across, Inc.(FAI), a non-profit group based in
Milwaukee, WI, and founded by Matthias A. Seisay, a native of Sierra Leone.
** Five of the seven projects above were recommended by NorCal members.
We look for varied project opportunities in different regions of the world,
benefiting different groups of people, in keeping with the spirit and idea of

current Peace Corps Volunteers from Northern California.
We look for opportunities to totally fund a project, to complete the
necessary funding so that the project can get started, or to expand or replicate a

Funding will not be provided for individuals (salaries), scholarships,
personal travel or general operating expenses.
Criteria for Grants:
Prospective projects will include as many as possible of the following:
Be technically and economically feasible
Improve the general welfare of the community
Ensure that all those actively involved in the project will benefit from the

Facilitate the transfer of technology, skills and knowledge to others
Submitting Proposals for Annual Grants:
Interested parties must submit a proposal which contains the following
· Name and address of the organization. Local contact, address, and
phone when organization is overseas. Contact information for individual in
Northern California who is knowledgeable of organization and project (if
· General description of the organization, including goals, purpose,
a brief history of previous and current work, and sources of funding.
· Organization budget: last year’s yearly income and expenditures
including salaries and administrative expenses (audited report if available);
projected budget and source of funding.
· Project title and detailed description. How project meets Criteria
for Grants (outlined previously). Project time-line: how project will phase
out or become self-sufficient.
· Key personnel and their responsibilities for the project.
· Project budget in detail: income and expenditures of proposed
project (e.g., cost of materials), community contribution, etc.
· Amount and purpose of funding requested from NorCal.
· For projects overseas, how funds will be transmitted to the project.
