      Poverty

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: John Hatch will present an overview of
microfinancing, then discuss his newest venture, The Alliance of Students
Against Poverty. ASAP is a campaign to abolish extreme poverty by the
year 2025. It is currently organizing thousands of student activists to
raise $8 billion dollars over the next 18 years by enlisting millions of
Americans to reduce their current consumption by $1/day and to donate
that money to those living on less than $1/day. As a foundation, ASAP
will extend grants to existing microfinance institutions (MFI) that seek
to double-match the savings of the poorest of the poor, and single-match
investments in the poorest by MFIs themselves.
