      Venture Strategies for Health and Development (VSHD), a Berkeley,
      Californiabased nonprofit organization, is dedicated to improving the
      health of low-income people in developing countries, by using business
      mechanisms and building on the power of local market forces. VSHD works with
      governments and leaders in the medical communities of developing countries
      at their request, and we collaborate closely with the School of Public
      Health at the University of California, Berkeley, which provides the
      scientific base for our programs.

      VSHD's misoprostol program assists local governments and businesses in
      developing countries to make generic drug misoprostol available for
      controlling postpartum hemorrhage, the leading cause of maternal death. By
      facilitating the approval and importation of the drug by local governments
      and business owners, the project creates a substantial long-term return in
      the saving of women's lives. Perhaps what makes misoprostol most exciting
      is its low cost and the corresponding possibility to be both affordable *and
      * self-sustaining. For further information: www.venturestrategies.org
