Wednesday, April 4: "Deadly Play: War and Children"
Speaker: Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy
      Soldier

The program may sell out, so reservations are strongly recommended.
PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS E-MAIL. FOLLOW THE RESERVATION PROCEDURE
      STATED BELOW.

An estimated 300,000 child soldiers are forced to serve in government or
insurgent armies in conflicts worldwide. At 13, Ishmael Beah was a
soldier in his native Sierra Leone until rescued by UNICEF three years
later. He will discuss why children become targets in wars and the
arguable effectiveness of humanitarian actions to stop recruitment and
      abuse.

Ishmael Beah, now a dynamic 26-year-old, has addressed the United Nations
General Assembly on the subject of child soldiers. In May 2004 he earned
his Bachelor of Arts degree at Oberlin College in New York. His book A
Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier was recently No. 2 on the New
York Times Bestsellers List, and would have been No. 1 if Starbucks sales
had been included. He and his book have received extensive media
      attention.

Beah serves on the Advisory Committee for Human Rights Watch Children's
Rights Division, and Human Rights Watch is presenting the program in
association with the Commonwealth Club. They are graciously providing
      hors d'ouevres for the reception.
