      Hi,

I have a 70-200 f/2.8 VR, which I bought second hand a few years ago. The
lens has clearly been well used in its past.

Recently the focus ring has started to feel really rough, almost unusable.
On a positive note, if I point the lens to the sky then the focus ring
moves freely, and there doesn't feel to be any 'play' in the ring as it
      moves.

So optimistically it seems like it is repairable, or at least I can
disassemble carefully to decide how serious it is.

Has anyone attempted to disassemble this lens?

Google doesn't return any obvious attempts, or internal photos. Is there a
      service manual available?

      Any advice appreciated.

      Many thanks

Thanks to a fellow group member, I got the information I needed from the
service manual and successfully disassembled the lens.

I'd need a specialist tool to completely take out the zoom mechanism, but
I can access it. (Earlier I said 'focus' ring by mistake; I meant the zoom
ring, which is easier to access)

So I've freed up the stiff mechanism, but it is almost totally dry of
lubricant. What should I use to lubricate it?

Seems that the type of lubrication to use isn't mentioned in the service
manual. I can see traces of a white grease; is this a lithium libricant?

        Thanks
