- Jun 13, 2008It is certainly true that when we *act*, we do not think 'historically'.
Of course, Nietzsche was opposing the intellectual climate of his time
where historiology had become dominant, with Hegelianism promoting
history as philosophy. Historicism suggested that history moved
according to general laws - a view rejected by Nietzsche's colleague
Burckhardt. But Burckhardt himslef believed in the contemplation of a
statical view of history - this too was rejected by Nietzsche.
Indeed, Nietzsche rejected all forms of historicism and restricted
historiology to that which serves [active] life.
The type of history could be monumental, antiquarian or critical - as
long as it paved the way for activity.
