Polio has been eradicated
New commitments were made by governments and philanthropists including Bill Gates,* enabling over a billion children to be vaccinated. By 2018, polio has been eradicated from the world. New knowledge about the viruses, new technologies and new tactics to reach the most vulnerable communities have consigned it to history.* This is only the second time that a human disease has been completely wiped out; the previous instance was smallpox in 1979.*
$10 per gallon gasoline is coming fast if the line at the gas station is not too long and they run out.
Available net exports of oil to the US will decrease by half in seven years. The US imports 18.5 million barrels per day (mbd) and only produces 7 mbd. That is, by 2020 people on fixed income will be hurting if we do not ration gasoline and heating oil.
China/PRC used 8 million barrels per day (mbd) in 2010, in 2011 it was 8 mbd. At this rate of increase by 15 mbd by 2015. India is using 4 mbd to 7 mbd by 2015 China and India will consume all the world exports of oil production.
The REAL threat
Have our models of growth entered into an exhaustion phase?
Growth has fallen in France from 5% a year to 1%. In the 1970s, France responded to the oil crises by going nuclear. Now, those plants near the end of their lives.
We recently passed 400ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere. The International Energy Agency recently stated that we are on course for a rise of between 3.6 and 5.3°C. That’s a catastrophe.
Climate scientist James Hansen has said “we are dancing on the edge of losing the climate in which civilization emerged”.
Already our use of ecological services means that nature needs a year and a half to deal with the waste we generate every year. The idea that growth is needed in order to reduce poverty is rubbish. With our current ‘trickle down’ model, getting to a stage where everyone in the world has $1 a day would require 15 planets worth of resources.
Consumption is 5 or 6 time annual discoveries of oil in the ground. Therefore, we need gasoline and heating and electricity energy rationing now.
We built our present US infrastructure when the energy pay back was 30, 50, 70 to one. And we will not be able to repair our infrastructure or increase it with a 2 to 3 to one energy pay back on tar sands.
Even if we can bring all the green house gas emissions down to zero today, we will still have very negative impacts from global climate change.
Demand is expected to grow by 40 percent by 2027, roughly 14 years from now. In a culture like ours that has concerns about the poor, I hope we don’t let the price of resources determine who eats, has employment, and who keeps warm in the winter.
Rationing gasoline and electricity is the most democratic in terms of our cultural value of being concerned about the poor.
We must do rationing of gasoline and electricity because it is the most democratic in terms of our cultural value of being concerned about the poor.
NSA shares unfiltered intelligence with Israel
September 11, 2013: The US has a long-standing agreement to share NSA signals intelligence with Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. U.S. officials say Israel aggressively seeks to spy on the U.S. government. The Guardian quoted from other NSA documents it did not publish in which U.S. officials expressed concerns about the intelligence-sharing arrangement. “There are parameters on what NSA shares with them, but the exchange is so robust, we sometimes share more than we intended.”
A 2009 document leaked by former contractor Edward Snowden, is a memorandum of understanding between the NSA and its Israeli counterpart, says the U.S. government regularly hands over intercepted communications that have not first been reviewed by U.S. analysts and are likely to contain phone calls and emails of U.S. citizens.
The agreement allows for the possibility that intercepts given to Israel might include the communications of U.S. government officials,
The U.S. decision to provide Israel unfiltered electronic intelligence feeds raises questions about why American officials would trust Israel to respect the privacy of U.S. citizens.
Here is a news story that adds to the history of Israel spying on the US.
Some CIA officials still bristle over the disappearance of a Syrian scientist who was the CIA's only spy inside Syria's military program to develop chemical and biological weapons. The scientist was providing the agency with extraordinary information about pathogens used in the program, former U.S. officials said about the previously unknown intelligence operation.
At the time, there was pressure to share information about weapons of mass destruction, and the CIA provided its intelligence to Israel. A former official with direct knowledge of the case said details about Syria's program were published in the media. Although the CIA never formally concluded that Israel was responsible, CIA officials complained to Israel about their belief that Israelis were leaking the information to pressure Syria to abandon the program. The Syrians pieced together who had access to the sensitive information and eventually identified the scientist as a traitor.
Before he disappeared and was presumed killed, the scientist told his CIA handler that Syrian Military Intelligence was focusing on him.
The CIA considers Israel its No. 1 counterintelligence threat in the agency's Near East Division, the group that oversees spying across the Middle East, according to current and former officials. Counterintelligence is the art of protecting national secrets from spies. This means the CIA believes that U.S. national secrets are safer from other Middle Eastern governments than from Israel.
Israel's foreign intelligence service, the Mossad, and its FBI equivalent, the Shin Bet, have been suspected of recruiting U.S. officials and trying to steal American secrets.
An attempt by the FBI to penetrate New York and New Jersey Israeli intelligence-connected office moving companies, such as Urban Moving Systems, was disrupted by pressure from FBI and Justice Department headquarters in Washington, DC. Much of that pressure reportedly originated from then-U.S. Attorney for Northern New Jersey Michael Chertoff, the current Secretary of Homeland Security.
Urban Moving Systems was discovered to have conducted an emergency move of the Israeli Zim-American Israeli Shipping Company from the World Trade Center’s North Tower just weeks prior to 911
Mossad agents were also trailing and harassing CIA agents assigned to track people like lead hijacker Mohammed Atta, especially in Fort Lee, New Jersey where Atta lived for a while.
U.S. intelligence sources report that the late FBI agent John O’Neill was well aware of the suspicious Israeli activity in the lead up to 9-11.
The FBI also had severe problems with communications compromises during the lead up to 9-11. FBI agents tailing Israeli agents in the United States (who, in turn, were living and working in close proximity to the Al Qaeda hijackers) were stymied by the compromise of secure FBI and Justice Department communications systems by Israeli contractor telecommunications companies such as AMDOCS and Comverse Infosys. Also Israeli software companies had permitted Mossad unfettered access to credit card and telephone records of U.S. (FBI) counter-intelligence agents. America’s counter-intelligence community was trying to do its job with one hand tied behind its back.
Ex-CIA agents report that the Russian intelligence (successors to the former KGB) were actually tipped off about the Crypto AG project CIA spy Aldrich Ames. For a while NSA’s trap doors secret was only known to the Soviets and Israelis.
According to U.S. intelligence sources, Switzerland-based international billionaire fugitive and suspected Mossad asset Marc Rich stepped in and invested heavily in Crypto AG’s to boost its deflated stock values. Rich was pardoned by President Clinton in January 2001 in an eleventh hour deal partly negotiated by Rich’s attorney (and I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby).
Communications encoded/encrypted by Crypto AG machines were; according to U.S. intelligence sources, routinely read by Rich and his Israeli intelligence contacts. according to intelligence sources.
Encrypted cables between oil companies and buyers, including spot market dealers, allegedly allow Rich and his friends to underbid lucrative oil contracts. In addition, compromised “secure” bank networks have permitted fake wire transfers to loot numbered bank accounts, including those held by Saudi and Vatican officials. These revelations apparently resulted in the mysterious murder three years ago of the Crypto AG salesman in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, the ability by the Israelis to monitor diplomatic, intelligence, and financial traffic prior to the 911 terrorist attacks permitted international speculators to place “put” options on the stocks of American and United Airlines just prior to September 11, 2001 – an operation that yielded hundreds of millions in profits.
Former NSA Director Michael Hayden’s outsourcing contracts named “Groundbreaker” and “Trailblazer,” to companies with ties to Israeli intelligence, and in so doing, giving the Israelis increased access to NSA’s operations and its massive archives of secrets.
July 14, 2009: Three years ago, John Bolton, the former Undersecretary of State for Arms Control, told Congress that he had asked the NSA to reveal to him the identities of 19 American citizens who were caught up in 10 of the NSA's raw intelligence reports since 9/11.
When Senator Chris Dodd first requested access to the 10 intercepts in which John Bolton asked for names of mentioned U.S. officials, he was rebuffed and told that it was not unusual for such requests to be placed and that there had been approximately 400 such requests from State Department analysts over the last four years.
Well, that is not true actually. It has since been confirmed by officials that it is highly unusual for political, non-career appointees to request such information from the National Security Agency. Bolton downplayed the number of his own requests during his confirmation testimony,
According to former coworkers, Bolton withheld information that ran counter to his goals from Secretary of State Colin Powell on multiple occasions, and from Powell's successor Condoleezza Rice on at least one occasion. Critics allege Bolton tried to spin intelligence to support his views and political objectives on a number of occasions. Greg Thielmann, of the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR), was assigned as the daily intelligence liaison to Bolton.
In 2011, the State Department reported that 17 Americans were killed in all terrorist incidents worldwide. The same year, a single outbreak of listeriosis from tainted cantaloupe killed 33 people in the United States. Foodborne pathogens also sickened 48.7 million, hospitalized 127,839 and caused a total of 3,037 deaths. This is a typical year, not an aberration.
Since Sept. 11, 2001, foodborne pathogens have killed an estimated 36,000 people in the United States. During this same period, terrorism has killed 323 Americans worldwide.
We have more to fear from contaminated cantaloupe than from al-Qaeda, yet the United States spends $75 billion per year spread across 15 intelligence agencies in a scattershot attempt to prevent terrorism, illegally spying on its own citizens in the process. By comparison, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is struggling to secure $1.1 billion in the 2014 federal budget for its food inspection program.
1 in 6 Americans are sickened every year at an annual cost to the economy of nearly $80 billion.
US food imports have doubled in the past 10 years. Nearly two-thirds of fresh fruits and vegetables sold in the United States are now imported, yet the FDA inspected just 6 percent of domestic food producers and 0.4 percent of food importers in 2011.
NSA budget is so safe, the agency is planning to double the size of its facilities and operations over the next 10 years, surpassing the Pentagon in square footage. At the same time, proposals for minuscule cuts in the bloated Pentagon or DHS budgets consistently draw howls of protest from a bi-partisan chorus of Congressional leaders, most of whom depend on Pentagon and/or DHS spending in their home districts.
[...] Much more serious is the danger that the spent fuel rod pool at the top of the nuclear plant number four will collapse in a storm or an earthquake, or in a failed attempt to carefully remove each of the 1,535 rods and safely transport them to the common storage pool 50 meters away. Conditions in the unit 4 pool, 100 feet from the ground, are perilous, and if any two of the rods touch it could cause a nuclear reaction that would be uncontrollable. The radiation emitted from all these rods, if they are not continually cool and kept separate, would require the evacuation of surrounding areas including Tokyo. Because of the radiation at the site the 6,375 rods in the common storage pool could not be continuously cooled; they would fission and all of humanity will be threatened, for thousands of years. WHO Refuses to Publish Report on Cancers and Birth Defects in Iraq Caused by Depleted Uranium Ammunition
September 13, 2013: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has categorically refused in defiance of its own mandate to share evidence uncovered in Iraq that US military use of Depleted Uranium and other weapons have not only killed many civilians, but continue to result in the birth of deformed babies.
This issue was first brought to light in 2004 in a WHO expert report “on the long-term health of Iraq’s civilian population resulting from depleted uranium (DU) weapons”. This earlier report was “held secret”, namely suppressed by the WHO:
The study by three leading radiation scientists cautioned that children and adults could contract cancer after breathing in dust containing DU, which is radioactive and chemically toxic. But it was blocked from publication by the World Health Organization (WHO), which employed the main author, Dr Keith Baverstock, as a senior radiation advisor. He alleges that it was deliberately suppressed, though this is denied by WHO. (See Rob Edwards, WHO ‘Suppressed’ Scientific Study Into Depleted Uranium Cancer Fears in Iraq, The Sunday Herald, February 24, 2004)
Almost nine years later, a joint WHO- Iraqi Ministry of Health Report on cancers and birth defect in Iraq was to be released in November 2012. “It has been delayed repeatedly and now has no release date whatsoever.”
To this date the WHO study remains “classified”.
According to Hans von Sponeck, former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations,“The US government sought to prevent the WHO from surveying areas in southern Iraq where depleted uranium had been used and caused serious health and environmental dangers.” (quoted in Mozhgan Savabieasfahani Rise of Cancers and Birth Defects in Iraq: World Health Organization Refuses to Release Data, Global Research, July 31, 2013
This tragedy in Iraq reminds one of US Chemical Weapons used in Vietnam. And that the US has failed to acknowledge or pay compensation or provide medical assistance to thousands of deformed children born and still being born due to American military use of Agent Orange throughout the country.
The millions of gallons of this chemical dumped on rural Vietnam were eagerly manufactured and sold to the Pentagon by companies Dupont, Monsanto and others greedy for huge profits.
Given the US record of failing to acknowledge its atrocities in warfare, I fear those mothers in Najaf and other Iraqi cities and towns advised not to attempt the birth of more children will never receive solace or help.
A United Nations that is no longer corrupted by the five Permanent Members of the Security Council is what is needed.
