The song and stories of tango will take center stage
at Joe's Pub, April 20th, 11pm, when Maria Cangiano
presents her soulful journey of the human condition
through tango. Trained as an opera singer, Maria
Cangiano combines drama and singing in her
interpretation of old and new Tango songs as
"mini-operas" or melodramatic stories. Called by her
many fans, "Anna Magnani with voice," Ms Cangiano,
originally from Argentina, has a unique voice within
Argentine Tango's new generation of musicians. The
depth and power of Maria Cangiano's woeful, soulful
voice brings the nostalgic nature of the music to
      life, Brooklyn Press, 2002.

Tango's rich lyric tradition will be highlighted,
manifesting humankind's conflicts and yearnings from
gender issues, ethnic stereotypes, and class conflicts
to the plain old heartache of love in all its forms.
TANGO AND BEYOND is a journey through the history of
tango songs, its characters and themes, from the turn
of the XIX century to the present. Five extraordinaire
tango and jazz and classic musicians -Octavio Brunetti
(piano), David Hodges (bandoneon), Mariano Gil
(flute/saxo), Victor Prieto (accordion) and Daniel
Reyes-Llinas (guitar)-some of the best exponents of
new tango in the United States-, and dancer Mariana
Parma and partner-come together to bring a new
interpretation of this music. The program will explore
the relationships between tango, classical music and
jazz with visuals -created by Maria Cangiano-
featuring present and past images of Buenos Aires to
enhance/counterpoint the messages of the music. Visual
artist Elizabeth Eckman and Maria Cangiano have
designed exclusive customs for the show.
