DOE Launches U.S. Drive To Plan Route To Vehicle Efficiency, Sustainable Energy

The U.S. Department of Energy has just launched a new initiative, called U.S. Drive, to promote vehicle efficiency and energy sustainability in the U.S. Formerly called the FreedomCAR and Fuel Partnership, U.S. DRIVE (Driving Research and Innovation for Vehicle efficiency and Energy sustainability) will bring together technical experts from the DOE, the national laboratories, and industry partners to identify areas where R&D is needed to move these priorities forward in the U.S. The group will also develop a road map for vehicle technology and energy infrastructure to help push the country into a renewable future.

According to Energy Secretary Steven Chu, “By bringing together the best and brightest in government and the automobile, electric utility, and fuels industries, we can develop promising, innovative technologies that move rapidly from the lab into cars on the road, along with the infrastructure to support them.” While we’re seeing some big oil names like BP and ExxonMobil on the list of partners that may work to keep the U.S. dependent on their products, it is encouraging to see the U.S. plotting a road map toward a greener energy future, as efforts up to this point have been a little scattered. Other partners in U.S. Drive include the United States Council for Automotive Research LLC (the collaborative research company for Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors) and Tesla Motors, Chevron Corporation, ConocoPhillips, Shell Oil Products U.S., DTE Energy, Southern California Edison, and the Electric Power Research Institute.
