[World Streets] New comment on Honk! Concepts Run Wild at Dutch-American Bike Sla....
- Green Idea Factory has left a new comment on your post "Honk! Concepts Run Wild at Dutch-American Bike Sla...":
This sounds like a great and productive event.
Solving bridge connections and shower needs are great, but the completely carfree Broadway thing was discussed when the improvements were made to Times Square quite recently, and the "bike posse" is just a cycling school bus - isn't this happening already in the U.S.? - and actually, what about these kids going alone?
Automated, solar-powered bike ferries could be cool, but any ferry would be slow. Normal ferries are carbon hogs and require expensive staff.
Aside from the Broadway thing - which should be talked about as much as possible and whenever possible - I am curious about what other limits were thought about for cars:
The use of FDR for sheltering and speeding up bikes could only be improved on by using the top part of FDR ITSELF for bikes, delivery vehicles, emergency vehicles and perhaps BRT. Radical, sure. but it seems that this fits with the other concepts Sheltering bikes could still be cool but not if the car situation is left as is.
By making the rest of Manhattan more carfree and car-lite, Governor's Island could be made... bike-free and just for pedestrians(!) and also allow pet dogs in certain areas. Dogs are family members, but bikes are machines (Amsterdam public transport allows large pet dogs for free, the NYC subway and buses and Governor's Island prohibits them). Learning to cycle safely and effectively in Manhattan can only be done in Manhattan.
It would send a very strong message if a proposal for a bike-free pedestrian area complemented by carfree and carlite areas which improve conditions for cycling was produced at a bike event.
