      Abstract

      .

      Oxidant formation in the vasculature contributes to vascular disease and
      dysfunction associated with obesity. In contrast, exercise-dependent
      production of oxidants may stimulate adaptive responses that protect
      against the development of such diseases. In this review, we discuss
      current concepts in the biology of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species
      and how their function is modulated in the context of vascular disease,
      obesity, and aerobic exercise.

      Emerging evidence suggests that changes in oxidant formation are evident
      in obesity and that body-fat reduction (for obese individuals) may reduce
      oxidant formation and, in turn, impact vascular redox signaling.
      This has important health implications because ROS/RNS is believed to play
      a central role in the development of atherosclerosis and to contribute to
      obesity-related diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Additional
      health benefits may be achieved with regular exercise because exercise
      can induce adaptations that increase NO bioactivity and minimize oxidative
      injury.
