      RELIGION, CRIME, AND LAW:
      Martin Luther King's Mother Slain

      Good Morning, Everyone:

June 30, 1974: Mrs. Martin Luther King, Sr., 69,
mother of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the slain
civil rights leader and 1964 Nobel Peace Prize
winner, was shot to death while she played
"The Lord's Prayer" at the organ of the Ebenezer
Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. A church
deacon, Edward Boykin, 51, was also killed.

The shots were fired by a black sniper, Marcus
Wayne Chenault, 21, a bespectacled and chubby kid
from Dayton, Ohio. Chenault told Atlanta police he
intended to kill Dr. King, Sr., but didn't see him
and shot his wife instead. Former schoolmates of
Chenault claimed that he was a racist who spoke
against civil rights. On September 12, Chenault
      was sentenced to die.

      Very Sincerely,
      Dennis M. Linsky
