PORT ALBERNI - The federal and provincial governments have joined forces to contribute $2 million to assist Vancouver Island's Hupacasath and Ucluelet First Nations and their partners to construct and run the China Creek micro hydro project.
The hydro power facility is a joint partnership between the Hupacasath, Ucluelet First Nations, the City of Port Alberni and Synex Energy, collectively known as the Upnit Power Corporation.
Upnit has a contract to provide power to BC Hydro for the next 20 years.
Upnit president and Hupacasath Chief Councillor Judith Sayers says the 6.5 megawatt power facility will help Canada to meet its Kyoto commitments, as well as providing enough energy to supply 6,000 homes.
"For us it's like taking 8,000 cars off the road," she said.
The China Creek hydro project is scheduled to begin production this fall.
