Ahenakew's trial was originally set for July, but his Toronto-based lawyer, Alan Gold, withdrew from the case.
A former leader of the Assembly of First Nations, Ahenakew was charged with promoting hatred after making comments about Hitler to a Saskatoon newspaper reporter in Dec. 2002.
Ahenakew later apologized for his comments. He is due back in court on Nov. 12.
