'Best of Contact' > SHOULD TRADITIONAL MEDICINES BE FOR SALE?
      Friday July 16 @ 8 pm eastern, 5 pacific
      Aboriginal Peoples Television Network

'Bio-prospecting' for new sources of medicine can see plants used by
indigenous peoples for centuries become part of big profit-making schemes.
Companies patent these drugs as their 'invention' to make sure no one else
can make money off it, indigenous peoples included. But as lucrative as
plants are, the biggest 'genetic gold rush' may lead straight to indigenous
peoples themselves: to their DNA. Genetic research on Aboriginal people is
now common, sometimes without their knowledge. But does the gene business
have to be exploitative? Could it be a new positive source of wealth for
indigenous peoples instead? Or, as many Aboriginal critics argue, should
no-one be allowed to 'own' genes at all?

      [First aired: March 5/04]
