AFN National Chief Congratulates Outgoing Auditor General Sheila Fraser for a Decade of Service to Canada and First Nations
OTTAWA, May 31, 2011 /CNW/ - Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo today commented on outgoing Auditor General Sheila Fraser and acknowledged her excellent work and contributions to First Nation people and issues.

"I want to thank Auditor General Sheila Fraser for her excellent work over the last decade and, in particular, acknowledge the enormous contributions she has made to raising awareness and understanding of the real issues facing First Nations and Canada," said AFN National Chief Atleo. "Ms. Fraser made First Nation and Aboriginal issues one of her priorities from the very beginning of her term. Her work elevated the discussion by uncovering the real issues and the real solutions. In doing so, she provided a tremendous service to all Canadians. Her reports should be required reading for all parliamentarians and, indeed, for anyone looking at the situation of First Nations."

The National Chief noted that the Auditor General issued more than 30 reports on First Nations issues, addressing important topics like education, accountability, child welfare and land claims. As her term wound down, she remained outspoken in calling on the government to work with First Nations to improve the situation, stating: "I actually think it's quite tragic when you see that there is a population in this country that does not have the sort of basic services that Canadians take for granted."

The National Chief referred to the Auditor General's 2002 report on First Nations accountability as a landmark, stating: "Her report on accountability showed that, far from being unaccountable, First Nations are over-burdened with a federal system that requires them to provide more than 168 reports a year - or three per week - that are not useful to anyone because they do not contain useful information. Her recommendations on accountability should be the basis for a more effective and efficient approach. First Nations are taking up greater responsibility in all sectors and ensuring accountability every step of the way. We want to work with the Government on a full agenda of accountability."

The National Chief noted that the AFN, the Office of the Auditor General and other government departments were working cooperatively on an "Accountability for Results" initiative that included establishing a First Nation Auditor General and First Nation Ombudsperson. The AFN continues to call for such an approach as this in the interest of all Canadians.

"Auditor General Sheila Fraser has served with distinction, integrity and a real empathy for the people and issues she deals with," the National Chief said. "We wish her well in all her future endeavours and we look forward to a continued, positive and productive relationship with the Office of the Auditor General of Canada."
