      After reading this cost comparison it is hard to understand why Site-S is going to cost the People of BC 6.6 Billion.

      Conawapa Generating Station will be Manitoba's largest at up to 1485 MW max ability( later estimates closer to 1350).
      Situated on the Nelson River in a fairly remote area of Northern Manitoba.
      Estimated cost.... $5 billion.
      Cost per MW of installed capacity ( 1350 estimate) $3,700,000

      Romaine River Project Quebec. Up to 1500 MW max ability. Includes four dams.
      Estimated costs $6.5 billion
      Cost per MW installed capacity $4,330,000


      Muskrat Falls facility on the lower Churchill River Labrador .
      Generating station will produce 824MW max capacity
      Cost of dam and generating station $2.9 billion
      Cost per MW installed capacity $3,520,000

      The total cost of $6.2 billion includes the following.

      A. Muskrat Falls Generating Facility

      * 824 MW generating facility
      * Two HVac transmission lines connecting to Churchill Falls
      B. Labrador-Island Transmission Link (~1,100 km)

      * Labrador (900 MW) Converter Station (ac/dc)
      * Overhead HVdc transmission line from Muskrat Falls to Strait of Belle Isle
      * Submarine cables across the Strait of Belle Isle (30 km)
      * Overhead HVdc transmission line from the Strait of Belle Isle to Soldiers Pond
      * Soldiers Pond (900 MW) Converter Station (dc/ac)
      * Electrode sites in Labrador and Newfoundland
      C. Maritime Transmission Link from the Island of Newfoundland to Nova Scotia

      * Overhead HVac transmission connecting to the Island transmission grid
      * Bottom Brook (500 MW) Converter Station (ac/dc)
      * Overhead HVdc transmission from Bottom Brook to Cape Ray
      * Submarine cables across the Cabot Strait to Lingan, Nova Scotia (180 km)
      * Cape Breton (500 MW) Converter Station (dc/ac) tying into the existing Nova Scotia transmission grid.

      Site C is a proposed 900 MW facility that is generating station and local infrastructure only (no distribution etc).
      To date no mention has been made regarding transmission lines etc.

      Estimated cost Site C in early 2010 was $6.6 billion however there was a notation that costs may increase because of added engineering and structure costs to deal with river bank instability.


      Using the lower estimate of $6.6 billion the cost per MW unit of installed capacity is $7,300,000.

      This is
      1.68 times higher than Romaine River
      1.97 times higher than Conawapa
      2.1 times higher than Muskrat falls ( generating station and dam only)
