      Shalom Friends,

This Sunday is Lag Ba'Omer (literally the 33rd day of the Omer), it
commemorates the day that the students of R. Akiva stopped dying and
is also the yahrtzeit of the tanna R. Shimon Bar Yochai- one of the
greatest students of R. Akiva. While the death of the twenty-four
thousand students of R. Akiva showed a deficit in the transmission
of the Torah, the life of R. Shimon Bar Yochai represents a
continuation of the mesora-tradition. In addition R. Shimon Bar
Yochai represents the transmission of the hidden mystical
teachings of the Torah. Our sages attribute the authorship of the
Zohar, one of the primary Kabbalistic texts, to him and his school.
Lag Ba'Omer has become a mystical holiday celebrating the light of
the Torah he taught. Hundreds of thousands converge upon his tomb
in the hills of Meron and the day is celebrated with bonfires, music,
      singing, and dancing.

          Dear Friends,

This period in the Jewish calendar, the 49 days between the holidays of Passover and Shavuos, is known as Sefiras Ha'Omer (the counting of the Omer). Because many Jews died during this time of year, we enter into a state of mourning, and there are various customs with regards to attending live music events. That's why I haven't been listing any concerts for the past few weeks, but according to many opinions the ban on live music ends on or after Lag ba'Omer, tomorrow night, Saturday, May 5.
