*The OSU Socratic Club, with the generous support of the OSU Student Foundation, presents a debate that is free and open to the public.*
Since the publication of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species in 1859, the theological implications of evolution by natural selection have been at the forefront of popular debate over biological evolution. Does Darwin's theory lead inevitibly to atheism and philosopbical materialism or is it possible to harmonize it with Christian ideas of God and the Genesis account of Creation? Our speakers, both Christians, will offer widely-differing points of view. Andrew Karplus will argue that evolution is fully compatible with orthodox Christian belief in God and divine Creation, while Kevin Anderson will maintain that it cannot be accommodated with the biblical narrative. Both speakers will be given equal time for their presentations and a dialogue on the issues raised. Members of the audience will have the opportunity to address questions to them.
*Andrew Karplus* is a *Professor and the Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at OSU*, where he has taught since 1998. He holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Washington and held a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Freiburg in Germany. *Kevin Anderson* is *Director of the Van Andel Creation Research Center in Chino Valley, Arizona*. He obtained his Ph.D. from Kansas State University in microbiology. He held an NIH postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Illinois before, and was professor of microbiology at Mississippi State University. Dr. Anderson has published more than 20 papers in technical microbiology journals. He is currently the editor-in-chief of the Creation Research Society Quarterly.**Biographyhttp://creationwiki.org/Kevin_Anderson
The debate is the fourth in the Socratic Club's seventh year as a student organization at OSU. The Club is modelled on the original Socratic Club, which was founded at Oxford University in 1941, with C. S. Lewis serving as President. At OSU it offers a forum for opposing points of view on subjects of contemporary debate at the intersection of Christian belief and contemporary culture. Each speaker is given 20 minutes to present one side of an issue, after which the two query each other regarding their differences before the floor is opened to questions from members of the audience. Two events are planned for each quarter; for more information phone (541) 908-1461, for video recordings of past debates visit our archives http://oregonstate.edu/groups/socratic/archive.html
