I plan to attend thsee seminars. The speakers include
Carl Grant and Mike Dodaro, who are friends that have
attended our creation seminars. Their seminar purports
to relate Darwinism, music history of Faust, and
Christian Theology. Carl Grant gave a well-received
talk for my luncheon group last year on the philosophy
of physics, supporting intelligent design theism.

Charles Darwins Evolution of the Species was
published in 1859, the same year as the premier of
Charles Gounods opera Faust. This coincidence is
remarkable because Evolution of the Species and the
Faust legend are representative of entirely separate
and antithetical world views. Gounods opera, which
made the composer the most famous musician in Paris,
retells the tale of an aging philosopher who sells his
soul to the devil for youth and love. It is a story of
damnation and redemption told in then popular idioms
of Christian theology. The philosophical underpinnings
of Darwins Evolution of the Species are
materialistic and irreligious. In this contrast we
find the elements of the culture war raging 150 years
      later in American society.

Trinity Parish church was organized in 1865 just six
years after Faust and Evolution of the Species.
Ensuing generations have seen the divergence of world
views insipient in these works. In two Sunday
afternoons, Jan 16th and February 20th, we will
explore some continuing cultural conflicts through
discussion of art and philosophy in the early stages
      of these conflicts.
