Group Description

After a workshop/visit last August with Becky Anderson from Handmade In America, we formed a group (about 10 organizations and businesses related to fiber arts) to promote fiber arts through a system of trails/guidebook/website/virtual tours similar to the Handmade In America model. We hope to have artists studios, art centers, museums, etc all listed in the guidebook - like having a studio tour all year round. We have a yahoo group - we keep in touch and discuss issues, make plans, etc. We are trying to involve fiber related individuals, businesses and organizations in this and are inviting you to join with us in this important endeavor.

We are inviting all kinds of fiber artists to join. Artists who sell their work through all sorts of different venues will benefit from this. I think that there will be more obvious benefits to
artists who will be able to open their studios to the public.
But fiber-focused galleries and gift shops and fiber producers will be
on the trail too. And we also are hoping to produce a directory of
fiber people as well. It'll be hard to say who will be able to open
their studios to the public, who will find that to their benefit. Becky
Anderson mentioned several times that many artists on the Western North
Carolina trails that Handmade In America organized were able to quit
going to shows and sell as much as they could produce at home. This was
very welcome to these people. I expect that we have artists in similar circumstances
here in NM too.

Through the efforts of Diane Bowman of the Espanola Valley Fiber Arts Center, we are pursuing website development and graphics software (which
Adobe has generously donated) so that we can begin work on our new New
Mexico Fiber Artisans website. Also, we may find funding for some of our
development and printing costs for a guidebook for fiber arts and artists. We are applying for cooperative advertising funds to both Dept of Tourism and Dept of Economic Development
