I too have converted some HO hoppers to n.g. by cutting the top down a bit or taking out one panel section of those Athearn 2 bay cars.   Narrowing too--it all works, I ended up with some EBT 2 bay look a likes.   Years ago I put n.g. trucks on some Varney iron ore cars and they looked pretty good too.   Remember its OUR railroad and we make it the way we want!!!
The Dolly Varden Onyox cars in the book Silver Dreams would be great for a small operation--the wooden ones for the wood butcher modelers.  The steel ones by plastic.  There were some steel ones left on the WP&Y when I visited there in 1961.

Added to Silversmith Power Plant Album 3 photos of a conversion project using Bachmann 2 Bay hopper cars.
Not DV ore cars, but based on DSS&A  Stg ore cars built in 1913 by American Car & Foundry (9000-9399). I sectioned a Bachmann 2 bay, by removing two center panels and bottom bays, SB replacement hopper from styrene. I converted 5 cars to center dump and 1 side dump. Still need to get ahold xpme brake wheels for the hopper dump system.
