Dershowitz in WSJ: Obama's legacy and the Iranian bomb
Professor Alan Dershowitz
March 23, 2010
The following op-ed by HLS Professor Alan Dershowitz, "Obama's legacy and the Iranian bomb," appeared in the March 23, 2010, edition of the Wall Street Journal.
The gravest threat faced by the world today is a nuclear-armed Iran . Of all the nations capable of producing nuclear weapons, Iran is the only one that might use them to attack an enemy.
There are several ways in which Iran could use nuclear weapons. The first is by dropping an atomic bomb on Israel , as its leaders have repeatedly threatened to do. Hashemi Rafsanjani , a former president of Iran , boasted in 2004 that an Iranian attack would kill as many as five million Jews. Mr. Rafsanjani estimated that even if Israel retaliated with its own nuclear bombs, Iran would probably lose about 15 million people, which he said would be a small "sacrifice" of the billion Muslims in the world.
The second way in which Iran could use nuclear weapons would be to hand them off to its surrogates, Hezbollah or Hamas. A third way would be for a terrorist group, such as al Qaeda , to get its hands on Iranian nuclear material. It could do so with the consent of Iran or by working with rogue elements within the Iranian regime.
Finally, Iran could use its nuclear weapons without ever detonating a bomb. By constantly threatening Israel with nuclear annihilation, it could engender so much fear among Israelis as to incite mass immigration, a brain drain, or a significant decline in people moving to Israel .
These are the specific ways in which Iran could use nuclear weapons, primarily against the Jewish state. But there are other ways in which a nuclear-armed Iran would endanger the world. First, it would cause an arms race in which every nation in the Middle East would seek to obtain nuclear weapons.
Second, it would almost certainly provoke Israel into engaging in either a pre-emptive or retaliatory attack, thus inflaming the entire region or inciting further attacks against Israel by Hezbollah and Hamas.
Third, it would provide Iran with a nuclear umbrella under which it could accelerate its efforts at regional hegemony. Had Iraq operated under a nuclear umbrella when it invaded Kuwait in 1990, Saddam Hussein 's forces would still be in Kuwait .
Fourth, it would embolden the most radical elements in the Middle East to continue their war of words and deeds against the United States and its allies.
And finally, it would inevitably unleash the law of unintended consequences: Simply put, nobody knows the extent of the harm a nuclear-armed Iran could produce.
In these respects, allowing Iran to obtain nuclear weapons is somewhat analogous to the decision by the victors of World War I to allow Nazi Germany to rearm during the 1930s. Even the Nazis were surprised at this complacency. Joseph Goebbels expected the French and British to prevent the Nazis from rebuilding Germany 's war machine.
In 1940, Goebbels told a group of German journalists that if he had been the French premier when Hitler came to power he would have said, "The new Reich Chancellor is the man who wrote Mein Kampf , which says this and that. This man cannot be tolerated in our vicinity. Either he disappears or we march!"
But, Goebbels continued, "they didn't do it. They left us alone and let us slip through the risky zone, and we were able to sail around all dangerous reefs. And when we were done, and well armed, better than they, then they started the war!"
Most people today are not aware that British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain helped restore Great Britain 's financial stability during the Great Depression and also passed legislation to extend unemployment benefits, pay pensions to retired workers and otherwise help those hit hard by the slumping economy. But history does remember his failure to confront Hitler . That is Chamberlain's enduring legacy.
So too will Iran's construction of nuclear weapons, if it manages to do so in the next few years, become President Barack Obama's enduring legacy. Regardless of his passage of health-care reform and regardless of whether he restores jobs and helps the economy recover, Mr. Obama will be remembered for allowing Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. History will not treat kindly any leader who allows so much power to be accumulated by the world's first suicide nationa nation whose leaders have not only expressed but, during the Iran-Iraq war, demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice millions of their own people to an apocalyptic mission of destruction.
If Iran were to become a nuclear power, there would be plenty of blame to go around. A National Intelligence Report, issued on President George W. Bush 's watch, distorted the truth by suggestion that Iran had ended its quest for nuclear weapons. It also withheld the fact that U.S. intelligence had discovered a nuclear facility near Qum , Iran , that could be used only for the production of nuclear weapons. Chamberlain, too, was not entirely to blame for Hitler 's initial triumphs. He became prime minister after his predecessors allowed Germany to rearm. Nevertheless, it is Chamberlain who has come to symbolize the failure to prevent Hitler 's ascendancy. So too will Mr. Obama come to symbolize the failure of the West if Iran acquires nuclear weapons on his watch."

Ex-NY Mayor Koch : Obama Anti-Israel `In Order to Please Muslims'
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
(IsraelNN.com) U.S. President Barack Obama is anti-Israel and "is willing to throw Israel under the bus in order to please Muslim nations," former New York City Mayor Ed Koch charged.
Koch, a Jewish Democrat, has been gradually "falling out of love" with President Obama , a term he used in a commentary he published last August. The recent snub by the president of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu , highlighted by a meeting without a press conference or even an official photograph, broke the proverbial camel's back for Koch .
After having opposed President Obama 's health care reform plan and expressing disappointment over his failure to convince Russia and China to back harsh sanctions against Iran , the former mayor recently wrote, "President Obama 's abysmal attitude toward the State of Israel and his humiliating treatment of Prime Minister Netanyahu is shocking."
He then went one step further with unprecedented public criticism of President Obama by a leading Democrat, telling Fox News that the country's leader is more interested in pacifying Muslim nations than helping Israel .
"What they did is they wanted to make Israel into a pariah," he said. "It's outrageous in my judgment," Koch commented.
"I have been a supporter of President Obama and went to Florida for him, urged Jews all over the country to vote for him, saying that he would be just as good as John McCain on the security of Israel. I don't think it's true anymore."
He also publicly questioned New York Senator Chuck Schumer , a Jew, for not protesting President Obama 's treatment of Israel . "It's their silence," Koch told the New York Post's Michael Goodwin . "I can't figure out where they are."
The senator reportedly told Koch he will openly side with Israel if President Obama does not back off."

The Trust is Gone

Follow Israel opinion on and .
It will never be the same again, says the writer. His words are prophetic, now that Netanyahu has met with Obama.
I consider the Obama administration's recent actions against the Israeli government to be outrageous and a breach of trust. I refer to the denunciations by Vice President Joe Biden , Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other administration officials The world knows what happened; nevertheless, I will try to put it into context.
Vice President Joe Biden was in Jerusalem to convey to the Israelis and the world that the United States government is committed to protecting and assuring the security of Israel from attack. While he was there, an Israeli government minister announced that the Israeli government had authorized the construction of 1,600 apartments in East Jerusalem to be occupied by Jews. Currently, 280,000 Jews live in East Jerusalem, and these apartments were to be added to an existing complex, built on land owned by Jews; about 250,000 Jews live on the West Bank outside of Jerusalem .
The timing of the Israeli government's announcement was unfortunate and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologized for it, but it did not mark any change in the Israeli government's policy. That policy is and has long been to allow construction of homes for Jews in East Jerusalem .
Now a little history. In 1947, the United Nations passed a resolution authorizing the creation of a Jewish state
Jordan conquered East Jerusalem , separating it from its Western half.
within the British Mandate of Palestine . After it declared independence in 1948, Israel was immediately attacked by the combined armies of Egypt , Jordan , Syria , Lebanon , Saudi Arabia and Iraq . Although Israel repelled the attack, Jordan conquered East Jerusalem , separating it from its Western half. Ultimately, a cease fire was arranged by the U.N. and for the next 19 years until 1967, Jordan occupied East Jerusalem , including the old city, which historically had been the capital of King David 's ancient kingdom.
In 1967, the Arab armies of Egypt , Jordan , Lebanon and Syria again sought to destroy the State of Israel, but Israel prevailed in six days and conquered the Jordanian-held East Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip. During the 19 years that Jordan occupied East Jerusalem , it expelled all of the Jews living in what was historically the Jewish Quarter, and literally destroyed every synagogue and the homes of the Jews. When Israel reunited all of Jerusalem , Jews were, of course, allowed to live in any part of the city, and today, more than a quarter of a million Jews live in East Jerusalem . Numerous Arabs live there as well.
For quite some time and certainly since the Gaza War, the Palestinian Authority has broken off direct negotiations with Israel which had been ongoing since about 1993, in an effort to create two states, one Jewish and one Palestinian, living side-by-side in peace. This so-called two-state solution always seemed out of reach, notwithstanding the efforts of Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush , Bill Clinton and George W. Bush to jumpstart negotiations.
President Obama has sought to revive the negotiations between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority. He called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to assist by committing Israel to stop building new apartments in East Jerusalem and new settlements on the West Bank . In a move that Hillary Clinton , according to The New York Times, praised as "unprecedented," Netanyahu agreed to a ten-month settlement moratorium on the West Bank . However, he refused to stop Jews from living in any part of East Jerusalem , which is considered by Israelis to be an inseparable part of their capital. Both the Palestinian Authority and the U.S. government, ultimately accepted Netanyahu's offer, albeit grudgingly, and the Palestinian Authority agreed to engage in indirect talks through the American mediator George Mitchell .
Given this history, it was a shock to the Israeli and American supporters of Israel to have Joe Biden, a great friend of Israel, make the extraordinary harsh statement he made denouncing the future construction of 1,600 apartments in East Jerusalem. The Vice President's condemnation was even more baffling because, as The Times of March 12th reported, "he spent most [of the previous day] expressing his personal devotion to Israel , as well as the Obama administration's `iron-clad commitment to Israel 's security.'" As someone high in political life once said to me after I mentioned to him the violation of his iron-clad commitment to me on a subject involving the mass transit fares in New York City , "Next time, get it in steel. Iron breaks."
But even more disturbing than the Vice President's reaction were the comments and implicit threats voiced by Hillary Clinton in a telephone conversation she had with Prime Minister Netanyahu, described in The Times of
Humpty Dumpty has been broken and the absolute trust needed between allies is no longer there.
March 12th. "In a tense, 43-minute phone call on Friday morning, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel's plan for new housing units for Jews in East Jerusalem sent a `deeply negative signal' about Israeli-American relations."
Under President Clinton and George W. Bush , Israeli Prime Ministers have offered the Palestinians a state of their own on virtually the entire West Bank and Gaza , with land swaps to compensate for any portion of the West Bank that would remain in Israel , but those offers were rejected by the Palestinians.
What is most disturbing about the truly harsh and inflammatory rhetoric of both Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton directed at the government of Israel , is that it is speculated President Obama himself may have ordered Biden and Clinton to make the statements they made.
The Times of March 16th reported, "...the President was outraged by the announcement of 1,600 housing units in an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in East Jerusalem during Mr. Biden 's visit, administration officials said. Mr. Obama was deeply involved in the strategy and planning for Mr. Biden 's visit and orchestrated the response from Mr. Biden and Mrs. Clinton after it went awry, these officials said." President Obama and his administration's overly harsh public reaction to the construction in East Jerusalem appears to have emboldened Israel 's enemies and provided a cover for their extremist views. It has also created a serious crisis of confidence among the Israeli public that it can depend on this administration for its security.
the section right here: "There will be an effort this week when Prime Minister Netanyahu meets with President Obama to mend fences. There will be huggy-kissy pictures with Hillary and handshakes by Bibi Netanyahu with Joe Biden and the President, but the relations will never be the same again. Humpty Dumpty has been broken and the absolute trust needed between allies is no longer there. How sad it is for the supporters of Israel who put their trust in President Obama ."

Obama Dresses Down Netanyahu: No Photo Ops or Statements
by Gil Ronen
Follow Israel news
(IsraelNN.com) President Barack Obama appeared to carry on a policy of intentionally humiliating Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu this week, by ignoring custom and abstaining from any public appearance with him during Netanyahu's visit to the White House.
In a particularly unusual step, no press coverage or photographs of Netanyahu's meeting Tuesday with Obama at the White House were permitted.
Photographers had to make do with paparazzi-style shots of a somewhat grim-faced Netanyahu, accompanied by Defense Minister Ehud Barak, shot from a distance as they passed though a corridor between meetings.
An administration official who declined to be identified told the Associated Press that "photographs would have been inappropriate given the current situation." A photographer was allowed, however, into a meeting between the Israeli leader and Vice President Joe Biden on Monday.
Barak and Netanyahu meet with Biden / White House
Although Obama and Netanyahu met twice for a total of two hours, the White House did not issue a formal statement on the content of either meeting, in yet another break with tradition. Obama left it to spokesmen to issue terse statements on the talks with Israel .
Mark Toner, the deputy State Department spokesman, said that "the US made clear it is looking for steps to increase confidence and show commitment to the process."
A White House spokesman, Tommy Vietor, said the White House continues to believe that Israeli building in eastern Jerusalem is "destructive" to the Middle East peace process. He said the US was asking for "clarification" regarding the building plan for the Shepherd Hotel compound and called on Israel and the Palestinian Authority "to refrain from acts that could undermine trust."
Netanyahu was reported to be conferring with his top diplomatic advisers Wednesday, in a sign of the tension and uncertainty that appear to characterize the current visit to Washington .
He showed no sign of straying from Israeli policy regarding Jerusalem, however, telling congressional leaders he was concerned that peace talks "could be delayed for another year" unless the Palestinian Authority lets go of its demand for a full freeze on construction for Jews in Judea, Samaria and eastern Jerusalem.
"We must not be trapped by an illogical and unreasonable demand," Netanyahu said, according to his spokesman

For this day is great and holy before You, to refrain from work and to rest thereon with love, in accordance with the commandment of Your will. In Your will, G-d, our G-d, bestow upon us tranquility, that there shall be no trouble, sadness or grief on the day of our rest. G-d, our G-d, let us see the consolation of Zion Your city, and the rebuilding of Jerusalem Your holy city, for You are the Master of [all] salvations and the Master of [all] consolations.]

May the Merciful One bless my father, my teacher, the master of this house, and my mother, my teacher, the mistress of this house; them, their household, their children, and all that is theirs; us, and all that is ours. Just as He blessed our forefathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, "in everything," "from everything," with "everything," so may He bless all of us (the children of the Covenant) together with a perfect blessing, and let us say, Amen.
From On High, may there be invoked upon him and upon us such merit which will bring a safeguarding of peace. May we receive blessing from the L-rd and just kindness from the G-d of our salvation, and may we find grace and good understanding in the eyes of G-d and man.
On Shabbat add: May the Merciful One cause us to inherit that day which will be all Shabbat and rest for life everlasting.
May the Merciful One cause us to inherit that day which is all good.
May the Merciful One grant us the privilege of reaching the days of the Mashiach and the life of the World to Come. He is a tower of salvation to His king, and bestows kindness upon His anointed, to David and his descendants forever. He who makes peace in His heights, may He make peace for us and for all Israel ; and say, Amen.
Fear the L-rd, you His holy ones, for those who fear Him suffer no want. Young lions are in need and go hungry, but those who seek the L-rd shall not lack any good. Give thanks to the L-rd for He is good, for His kindness is everlasting. You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. Blessed is the man who trusts in the L-rd, and the L-rd will be his trust.
Recite the blessing for the wine, and drink in reclining position.
Blessed are You, L-rd, our G-d, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.
The fourth cup is poured and the door is opened. Say the following:
Pour out Your wrath upon the nations that do not acknowledge You, and upon the kingdoms that do not call upon Your Name. For they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his habitation.Pour out Your indignation upon them, and let the wrath of Your anger overtake them. Pursue them with anger, and destroy them from beneath the heavens of the L-rd.

ZOA: Obama Shows He's No Friend Of Israel By Disgraceful Action Toward PM Of The Jewish State March 26, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Morton A. Klein
Obama actions are an insult and affront to all Jews
Reports and editorials from around the world state that President Obama treated Prime Minister Netanyahu of the Jewish state of Israel in a disgraceful and unwarranted manner.
The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) strongly condemns President Obama for his behavior toward the Jewish state. We consider Obama's actions an affront and an insult to all Jews in America and throughout all the world. Obama apparently also made new and substantial demands of Israel while making no demands of the anti-peace regime of Mahmoud Abbas ' Palestinian Authority.
The ZOA concurs with the words of Commentary Magazine's Jennifer Rubin who wrote, " the Obami are sticking with their modus operandi preconditions and ultimatums for the Israelis, and water-carrying for the Palestinians;
Netanyahu reportedly wanted to know where the "reciprocity" was and why he was the one making all the concessions. ("Netanyahu, according to senior officials, said that while the US held him responsible for the timing of the announcement to build 1,600 units in Ramat Shlomo, rather than holding Interior Minister Eli Yishai responsible, Abbas was not held responsible when it came to the PA which recently presided over the naming of a square in Ramallah for the terrorist responsible for the Coastal Road massacre.")
It is not that the Obami fear daylight between the U.S. and Israel ; it is that they flaunt it. It is not credibility as an honest broker that the Obami are establishing but rather fidelity to the Palestinian negotiating stance. And after all this, and the revelation that the proposed sanctions will be pinpricks at best, would any reasonable Israeli leader believe this administration will do everything (or even anything too strenuous) to remove the existential threat to the Jewish state?
The low point in the history of U.S.-Israel relations has come about not because of a housing permit but because we have a president fundamentally uninterested in retaining the robust, close relationship between the two countries that other administrations of both parties have cultivated. The Obami set out to separate the U.S. from Israel , to pressure and cajole the Jewish state, and to remake the U.S. into an eager suitor to the Muslim World. In the process, anti-Israel delegitimizing efforts have been unleashed as Israel's enemies (and our own allies) sense that we have downgraded the relationship with the Jewish state, the Israeli public has come to distrust the administration, the American Jewish electorate is somewhere between stunned and horrified, and Israel is less secure and more isolated than ever before.
If mainstream Jewish organizations are serious about their stated mission, it is incumbent upon them to protest this state of affairs clearly and loudly and make their support for this president and his congressional enablers conditional, based on a change of policy in regard to Israel. Otherwise, they are enabling a potentially fatal assault on the security of the Jewish state. Silence is acquiescence, meekness is shameful. A generation from now, Jews will be asking those who led key American Jewish organizations, what did you do to protect Israel ? What did you do to protest the creep toward a "containment" policy for a nuclear-armed Iran ? They better have a good answer."
Following is a selected sample of articles discussing the Netanyahu-Obama White House meeting --
Washington Post Jackson Diehl March 24, 2010
" for the second time in a year, the Middle East peace process has been stalled by a U.S.-engineered deadlock .
Obama has added more poison to a U.S.-Israeli relationship that already was at its lowest point in two decades. Tuesday night the White House refused to allow non-official photographers record the president's meeting with Netanyahu; no statement was issued afterward. Netanyahu is being treated as if he were an unsavory Third World dictator, needed for strategic reasons but conspicuously held at arms length. That is something the rest of the world will be quick to notice and respond to. Just like the Palestinians, European governments cannot be more friendly to an Israeli leader than the United States . Would Britain have expelled a senior Israeli diplomat Tuesday because of a flap over forged passports if there were no daylight between Obama and Netanyahu? Maybe not
Obama chose to challenge Netanyahu on a point that is not material to the creation of a Palestinian state. As the Israeli leader has pointed out, previous U.S. administrations and the Palestinians themselves have already accepted that Jewish Neighborhoods in and around Jerusalem will be annexed to Israel in exchange for territory elsewhere
A new administration can be excused for making such a mistake in the treacherous and complex theater of Middle East diplomacy. That's why Obama was given a pass by many when he made exactly the same mistake last year. The second time around, the president doesn't look naïve. He appears ideological and vindictive.
Jerusalem Post blog Mayor Ed Koch March 23, 2010

news coverage of his Washington trip, describing his treatment at the White House as deeply humiliating because neither photographs or ceremony mark his visit.
There is little doubt that Obama administration officials thought it was appropriate to reciprocate the embarrassment felt by Mr. Biden here and to send a tough message .

No Denying White House Animus Toward Israel
But the cold reception of the Dalai Lama now seems like a wild party compared to the way Obama received Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House this week .it was an excuse for the administration to renew its war on Netanyahu
But never has the leader of America 's ally Israel been treated with such open contempt as shown by Obama to Netanyahu. The Israeli's visit to the White House was closed to the press with not even one photo released of their encounter. The fact is that Obama didn't even want his picture taken with Netanyahu. That's particularly strange since the president has never any qualms about getting snapped next to a wide variety of international leaders on his travels .Coming from a president that has spent his time in office making non-stop efforts to reach out to and engage America's enemies around the world, this open hostility to Israel is breathtaking in its brazenness.
Something that not even the elder Bush and James Baker ever tried to shove down Shamir's throat. There was no joint statement released after the talks ended but the White House let it be known that they expected the Israelis to make further concessions as in indication of their willingness to build confidence .the Palestinians, who have refused to even negotiate directly with Israel and who refused only a year and a half ago to accept an Israeli offer of an independent state that would have included part of Jerusalem, have not been asked by Obama to make any gestures of their own to enhance the non-existent chances of peace.
This White House's cold shoulder to Netanyahu even the most shameless Obama apologist can pretend that it was anything but an indication of the president's hostility The question for Jewish Democrats and other liberal friends of Israel is whether they are prepared to hold Barack Obama accountable in the same fashion.
Jerusalem Post Caroline Glick 03/22/2010
This is the behavior of an adversary.
U.S. President treating Israel like an enemy
Obama has made clear that he is not Israel's ally .he will do everything he can to downgrade US relations with Israel while maintaining his constant genuflection to the likes of Iran, Syria, the Palestinians and Turkey.

Binyamin Netanyahu humiliated after Barack Obama `dumped him for dinner'
For a head of government to visit the White House and not pose for photographers is rare. For a key ally to be left to his own devices while the President withdraws to have dinner in private was, until this week, unheard of. Yet that is how Binyamin Netanyahu was treated by President Obama on Tuesday night, according to Israeli reports on a trip viewed in Jerusalem as a humiliation.
"It was awful," the congressman said. One Israeli newspaper called the meeting "a hazing in stages", Another said that the Prime Minister had received "the treatment reserved for the President of Equatorial Guinea ."
He [Netanyahu] returned to Israel yesterday isolated after what Israeli media have called a White House ambush
"The Prime Minister leaves America disgraced, isolated and altogether weaker than when he came," the Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz said .
Newspaper reports recounted how Mr. Netanyahu looked "excessively concerned and upset"

As Jonathan has noted, we don't know exactly how shabby the Obami's behavior toward Bibi Netanyahu was. It is cause for alarm if it was remotely like this:
the projected air of chilliness and the ensuing deadlines that we have learned have been imposed on the Israeli government are enough to confirm that the relationship between the two countries is anything but "rock solid"
Victor Davis Hanson on Israel
Some strong supporters of both Obama and Israel are disappointed in the latest hysterical Biden-Clinton-Obama smack-down over the settlement issue. But why, I don't know this is a logical, not an aberrant, development from President Obama .
Once it was thought to be unprincipled guilt-by-association for pro-Israeli, anti-Obama groups to question candidate Obama's dubious associations; after all, Reverend Wright, Rashid Khalidi, Samantha Power, et al. were all on record as hostile to the Jewish state. Few likewise seemed to take note when a key Obama campaign foreign policy advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski , in September 2009 suggested that the U.S. might, and perhaps should, shoot down Israeli planes over Iraq on their way to Iran ; e.g., "If they fly over, you go up and confront them. They have the choice of turning back or not. No one wishes for this but it could be a Liberty in reverse." Then there was the nomination of Charles Freeman . And of course the present outreach to the two most terrorist-friendly regimes in the Middle East, theocratic Iran and authoritarian Syria . Someone from Mars might conclude that the United States has spent far more effort in courting Ahmadinejad and Assad than Netanyahu.
in aggregate they paint a pretty clear picture that for this administration the benefits of supporting Israel are far outweighed by the downside.
Israel 's multiple enemies now are almost giddy in sensing that America is not all that into protecting the Jewish state, intellectually or morally .

Analysis: Obama risks alienating Jewish voters
And in a break from tradition that many U.S. lawmakers saw as a snub, the White House accorded Netanyahu's visit none of the trappings usually extended to an important ally.
The news media were not allowed into any part of the initial 90-minute Tuesday evening meeting between the two leaders, or a follow-up 35-minute session. There was no joint news conference afterward, no statements about what transpired, not even a White House-produced photograph .
Since Obama took office, his relations with Israel have been tense. He has visited the Middle East twice as president but has yet to schedule an Israeli visit .
Netanyahu's reception at the White House was frosty .
The Jerusalem Post Herb Keinon & Khaled Abu Toameh 01/25/2010
Nevertheless, the administration's treatment of Netanyahu during his meeting with Obama created the impression of a deep crisis in relations .
Politico Laura Rozen & Ben Smith March 23, 2010
After meeting, deafening silence
The Obama administration shifted this week from red hot anger at Benjamin Netanyahu to an icier suspicion toward the Israeli Prime Minister
made sure to reward Netanyahu with a series of small snubs: There were no photographs released from the meeting, and no briefing for the press.
And as of late Tuesday evening, neither side had released the usual "readout" of the meetings' content a likely indicator of the distance between the sides.
Haaretz Aluf Benn 03/26/10
Netanyahu Leaves US in Disgrace
The visit only highlighted the deep rift between the American and Israeli administrations.
The Prime Minister leaves America disgraced, isolated, and altogether weaker than when he came.
But then calamity struck. At their White House meeting, Obama made clear to his guest that the letter Netanyahu had sent was insufficient and returned it for further corrections. Instead of a reception as a guest of honor, Netanyahu was treated as a problem child, an army private ordered to do laps around the base for slipping up at roll call.
The revolution in the Americans' behavior is clear to all
The moment the bill was passed, however, a victorious Obama was free to deal with his unruly guest.
The Americans made every effort to downplay the visit. As during this last visit in November, Netanyahu was invited to the White House at a late hour, without media coverage or a press conference. If that were not enough, the White House spokesman challenged Netanyahu's observation at AIPAC that " Jerusalem is not a settlement."
It was not the behavior Washington shows an ally,, but the kind it shows an annoyance.
Haaretz Yossi Verter 03/26/2010
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returned from the United States Thursday with egg all over his face but also with a painfully sharp insight gone are the days when the White House was considerate about the intricacies of Israeli domestic politics.
Obama is not making any effort to show sensitivity to Netanyahu's distress and worse he's ignoring it as though he intends to wreck some political chaos here.
"Obama isn't only sticking the knife in," a minister said, "he's twisting it and enjoying it."
Shock treatment, a senior Likud figure said Thursday about Netanyahu's experience in Washington .
The New Republic blog Marty Peretz March, 2010
Hillary Clinton , addressed AIPAC with the emptiest reassurances that Israel 's real security will be assured in any American design for a peace agreement .
And the president didn't allow even a formal goodbye today. I don't think there was even a photo op .
An American source close to the administration said that Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have decided to `test' Netanyahu and see whether he will carry out his promised gestures of good will toward the Palestinians.
So am I crazy?
Obama and Clinton are going to test Bibi's bona fides? What about the bona fides of Abu Mazen ? What about his capacity to make an agreement, let alone his will?
Obama and Clinton seem to trust the Palestinians more than they trust the government of Israel . And they trust them without the Palestinian Authority uttering anything other than demands.
The administration's capitulation to proximity talks as a formula for the negotiations is a very bad sign that it will accept anything from the Palestinians, including their and their Arab cousins' nearly hundred years design for failed talks .

Obama Dresses Down Netanyahu: No photo Ops or Statements
President Barack Obama appeared to carry on a policy of intentionally humiliating Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu this week by ignoring custom and abstaining from any public appearance with him during Netanyahu's visit to the White House.
In a particularly unusual step, no press coverage or photographs of Netanyahu's meeting Tuesday with Obama at the White House were permitted.
,,, Mark Toner , the deputy State Department spokesman, said that "the US made clear it is looking for steps to increase confidence and show commitment to the process."
A White House spokesman, Tommy Vietor , said the White House continues to believe that Israel building in eastern Jerusalem is `destructive' to the Middle East peace process .
Haaretz Bradley Burston 03/18/2010
Israel's Titanic moment: Does Obama want Bibi's head?
To the delight of Mahmoud Zabar and Mahmoud Ahmdinejad, Israel's homemade weapons of mass destruction pro-settlement bureaucrats with conflicts of financial and ideological interest have done in one meeting what Israel's foes have sought for generations: driving a stake through the heart of Israel's relationship with the White House

know someone who works or worked for some of the big companies in that area such as AT&T, or Verizon.
We thought you would like to know what Obama is doing to AT&T and Verizon current retirees and future retirees.

Companies Push to Repeal Provision of Health Law
By STEVEN GREENHOUSE
An association representing 300 large corporations urged President Obama and Congress on Monday to repeal a provision of the health care overhaul that prompted AT&T, Caterpillar and other companies to announce substantial charges for the current quarter.
The association, the American Benefits Council, said the provision which reduces the tax deductions for companies with drug coverage for their retired employees would deal a significant blow to corporate profits and would discourage companies from hiring more workers.
AT&T announced last week that it was taking a $1 billion charge because of the provision. Deere & Company announced a $150 million charge, Caterpillar a $100 million charge, and 3M a $90 million charge.
Many companies said they were taking these charges now, before the current quarter ended, to comply with accounting rules. But some corporate critics asserted that the companies' rapid response to the health legislation was aimed at pressing the administration to repeal the provision.
James A. Klein, the president of the American Benefits Council, called the provision "a serious mistake that is having negative and unintended consequences."
When Congress and President George W. Bush enacted a prescription drug plan for seniors in 2003, the legislation encouraged companies to continue providing prescription coverage to retirees, instead of shifting retirees to Medicare Part D, by having the government give those companies large subsidies for each retiree and also allowing them to deduct those subsidies from their income taxes.
Under the health care overhaul, the federal government will continue providing those subsidies amounting to 28 percent of a drug plan's costs but companies will lose the tax break.
In a telephone news conference on Monday, Mr. Klein cited a study by Towers Watson, a consulting firm, saying the loss of the deduction would cost companies $14 billion in future years.
"Particularly in this economic environment, it makes no sense to impose this type of a hit on companies' financial statements," Mr. Klein said. The provision takes effect in 2013, but accounting rules require companies to take immediate charges equal to the current value of any known hit to future profits.
About 6.3 million retirees an estimated two-thirds of them from the private sector are covered by employer drug plans. Mr. Klein cited a study by the Moran Company, a health care consulting group, estimating that as a result of the legislation, drug coverage would be altered for 1.5 million to 2 million retirees.
Many companies, he said, will stop providing drug coverage to retirees and will instead push them into Medicare Part D, causing the government to pay for their coverage.
AT&T said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission, "As a result of this legislation, including the additional tax burden, AT&T will be evaluating prospective changes to the active and retiree health care benefits offered by the company."
Mr. Klein said: "These announcements are required under accounting rules, and we should all expect more of such announcements in coming days and weeks. We're very troubled that these announcements have been challenged by officials in Obama administration and Congress."
Many employer plans for retiree drug coverage are part of union contracts. In December, the A.F.L.-C.I.O.'s legislative director, Bill Samuel, joined Mr. Klein in writing to Senator Harry Reid, the majority leader, urging the Senate not to enact this provision.
Gerry Shea, the A.F.L.-C.I.O.'s chief strategist on health care, stopped short of calling for a repeal of the provision. "We're very concerned about the disruption that could be caused because of this, with people being pushed out of employer plans," he said. "With all the changes we're looking at because of the new health legislation, we feel you don't need this."
Mr. Klein argued that the provision would undercut Mr. Obama 's job creation plans. "If companies are going to take a hit like this on their financial statements that will certainly hurt their ability to borrow in the marketplace and make the type of investments that will retain and create jobs," he said.
Verizon Joins AT&T in Booking Costs From Health-Care (Update1)
April 02, 2010, 12:00 PM EDT
(Adds number of Verizon retirees in seventh paragraph.)
By Amy Thomson and Olga Kharif
April 2 (Bloomberg) -- Verizon Communications Inc., the second-largest U.S. phone company, became the latest company to record a cost related to the U.S. health-care overhaul, saying it will incur a $970 million expense.
The one-time, non-cash cost will be taken in the first quarter, New York-based Verizon said late yesterday in a regulatory filing.
Verizon follows AT&T Inc., the biggest U.S. carrier, Deere & Co., Caterpillar Inc. and other companies in disclosing similar expenses after losing a tax benefit for retiree plans. The costs may reduce corporate profits by as much as $14 billion as companies account for the impact of the health-care reforms, according to benefits consulting firm Towers Watson.
"While it is a non-cash charge, it does reflect real value destruction, based on expected cash flows over the life of the company," said Jonathan Schildkraut , an analyst at Jefferies & Co. in New York . Schildkraut, who anticipated Verizon would book an expense of about $750 million, advises investors to buy the company's shares and doesn't own any himself.
AT&T said March 26 it would record $1 billion in costs in the first quarter related to the changes.
The almost $1 trillion program is meant to provide medical coverage to uninsured Americans and force insurance companies to lift restrictions, such as denying coverage based on pre- existing conditions.
The federal government pays a subsidy to companies that provide retiree prescription drug coverage. Under prior law, those subsidies were tax-exempt. The new law eliminates the tax break starting in 2013. Verizon said in February that it had about 213,000 retirees at the end of last year.
Not the `Final Story '
"This is having an impact on the bottom line and that can cut jobs," said Chetan Sharma , an independent wireless analyst in Issaquah , Washington . "I am not sure the final story has been told on this" because most companies still don't know exactly how the new law will affect them, he said.
Verizon had about 223,000 workers at the end of December, with about 35 percent represented by labor unions including the Communication Workers of America. About 58 percent of Dallas- based AT&T's workforce has union representation.
In a note to employees after the law was passed, Verizon said that the law would make the federal subsidy to provide retiree benefits less valuable to employers and so "may have significant implications for both retirees and employers."
Prior to the announcement, analysts had projected Verizon would report first-quarter profit excluding some items of 56 cents a share, the average of estimates compiled by Bloomberg.
While the costs erode profit, the new law won't hurt the company's ability to compete against its rivals, Schildkraut said.
"This bill doesn't make Verizon any less well positioned vis-à-vis cable competitors or AT&T," he said. "It doesn't make AT&T any less well positioned."
Standard & Poor's said today that the charge won't affect Verizon's credit rating. The cost relative to the company's revenue along with the deferral of higher cash taxes won't materially impact the company's credit profile, S&P said in a statement.
Verizon rose 26 cents to $31.28 yesterday in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The stock has dropped 5.6 percent this year. U.S. markets are closed today for Good Friday.
Craig Mathias, founder of wireless consultant Farpoint Group, said consumer prices for communications services may climb in about a year as the economy recovers.
"The money is going to come from somewhere," Mathias said. "Guess where it's going to come from? Us customers."

Speak out or stay silent (updated)
Wednesday, March 17, 2010 By: RJC Press Office
The National Jewish Democratic Council, which bills itself as the voice of Jewish Democrats, has now released a statement, 5 days after the tensions between Washington and Jerusalem began. Their statement never challenges the President on the harsh words and unseemly pressure he turned against Israel in the last week. Instead, it is a reaction to the reactions - from Jewish organizations and pro-Israel elected officials - to the rift in the U.S.-Israel relations, a rift created by the administration's unwarranted overreaction to the announcement of housing construction in Jerusalem .
The NJDC's "can't we all just get along" statement missed the point completely and never answered the real question: will Jewish Democrats stand up and speak out in support of Israel and hold President Obama accountable when his administration pressures Israel for unilateral concessions?
Most major Jewish organizations, including ADL, AIPAC, JINSA, the Orthodox Union, ZOA, the American Jewish Committee, the Rabbinical Council of America, and others have spoken out against the Obama administration's attacks on Israel and its demands that Israel make unilateral concessions to the Palestinians as a "confidence building" measure.
Leading Republicans and Democrats such as House Minority Leader John Boehner, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-CA), Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-NV), Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and others have done the same.
We continue to be surprised and saddened that the NJDC remains silent and has not taken a stand with Israel at this critical time. The Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism has also been silent.
We are troubled by the silence from Democrats such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and other "pro-Israel" Democrats, who have failed to stand up and speak out.

Obama: Why, some of my best friends are Jewish!

Many people have e-mailed Jeffrey Goldberg 's fascinating interview with Barack Obama on the subject of Israel , noting that he used the term "wound" and "sore" in reference to the Israeli-Palestinian situation. He doesn't call Israel either of those terms, despite what many have interpreted these remarks to mean, but Obama uses the interview to subtly play on associations as political capital. The key moment comes in the middle of the interview, when Obama suggests that he took political risks for having Jewish friends:
JG: Go to the kishke question, the gut question: the idea that if Jews know that you love them, then you can say whatever you want about Israel , but if we don't know you - Jim Baker , Zbigniew Brzezinski - then everything is suspect. There seems to be in some quarters, in Florida and other places, a sense that you don't feel Jewish worry the way a senator from New York would feel it.
BO: I find that really interesting. I think the idea of Israel and the reality of Israel is one that I find important to me personally. Because it speaks to my history of being uprooted, it speaks to the African-American story of exodus, it describes the history of overcoming great odds and a courage and a commitment to carving out a democracy and prosperity in the midst of hardscrabble land. ISRAEL LIVES March 11, 2014 9th of Adar II, 5774 Hevron House is NOW OURS, LIVNI, EGYPT, RALPH WALDO EMERSONBREAKING NEWSWE WON WE WON HEBRON HOUSE IS OURSby David Wilder http://www.israelnationalnews.com/Blogs/Blog.aspx/9#.Ux82UBBdW8wBARUCH HASHEM - THANK G-D!WE WON WE WON WE WONI COULD KEEP WRITING THESE WORKS A MILLION TIMES AND IT STILL WOULDN'T BE ENOUGH.This afternoon the Israeli Supreme Court rejected Arab appeals concerning Beit HaShalom in Hebron, thereby paving the way for our return to the building. It might be recalled: Mr. Morris Abraham and his family purchased Beit HaShalom for over a million dollars. The building, between Hebron and Kiryat Arba, was lived in by Jewish families for 22 months, before then Defense Minister Ehud Barak, expelled them, and had the building sealed. The Israeli Municipal Court ruled that the building should be returned to its Jewish owners, ruling that the building had been legally sold. The Arabs appealed the ruling to the Supreme Court, which today rejected the appeal.Presently, in order for us to return to the building, the Defense Minister, Moshe Bugi Yaalon, must sign a 'permit,' necessary to complete Jewish purchases in Judea and Samaria. This is a technical issue, and it is expected that the Defense Minister will sign the permits. Former Defense Minister Ehud Barak was quoted as saying that he (as Defense Minister) would sign the permits should the courts decide in our favor. This is a huge victory for the Hebron Jewish Community. Innumerable prayers, hours, money, tears, and what not, were invested in this building. Families with babies and small children lived in rooms without windows, through rain and snowstorms. Puddles of freezing water filled family apartments.Yet dedication, determination, and faith, at its highest level were the name of the game. People refused, under any circumstances, to leave. Following a Supreme Court decision allowing the families to be expelled from the building, people's determination increased.Following the expulsion, people never gave up. The court case dragged on, but in the end, justice has prevailed. We will move back into Beit HaShalom. And my friends, let it be known, this is just the beginning... 3-AN AMERICAN THINKER'S JEWISH JOURNEY) (RALPH WALDO EMERSON) Anti-Semitism THEN education, awakened an American thinker. Ralph Waldo Emerson learned by hearing and seeing about the good Jews did. We have to keep advancing our efforts for all mankind.1>LIVNI 'WILLING TO CEDE CONTROL OF JORDAN VALLEY'
Gil RonenArutz ShevaSept 16, 2013Sources close to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu are once again expressing concern that Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who heads the Israeli negotiating team with the Palestinian Authority (PA), is undermining the prime minister's positions in the talks.Daily newspaper Maariv quoted sources close to Netanyahu who said that Livni's positions differ from those of Netanyahu on the key issues of Jerusalem, eviction of Jewish communities and Israel's security arrangements in the Jordan Valley.
According to the report, Livni - who heads the left-wing Hatnua political party - is willing to pull out the IDF from the Jordan Valley which guards Israel's long eastern border, and let an international force take its place. Netanyahu vigorously opposes this, citing the region's crucial strategic importance.
In addition, Livni has agreed to divide Jerusalem between Israel and a future state of "Palestine" in Judea and Samaria, as well as a large scale eviction of Jews from communities in Judea and Samaria - whereas Netanyahu believes that communities need to remain under Palestinian sovereignty, with proper security arrangements.
Maariv reported three weeks ago that Livni has been making various generous offers in contacts with the PA and US representatives, while Netanyahu thinks that Israel should not give up its best cards in the early stages of negotiations, as it is not clear what the PA is willing to cede in terms of security arrangements.
"In Netanyahu's vicinity," the newspaper explained, "there is a feeling that the Americans, whom Israel is making every effort not to bring into the negotiations room, are eagerly using Livni's statements in their conversations with the Palestinians and thus weakening Israel's position in the talks."
There is widespread consensus among experts that ceding control of the Jordan Valley to any force but the IDF will make it extremely likely that missiles and other military hardware will be smuggled into Judea and Samaria, from where it could be used to target Tel Aviv with ease.
If a Palestinian state were to be established in all or the majority of Judea and Samaria, experts say such an arrangement would leave central Israel as narrow as 8 miles at some points, placing approximately 70% of Israel's population within firing-range of deadly mortars and rocket fire, and without the "strategic depth" to successfully defend against invasion.
Other sources close to the Prime Minister told Maariv that they were not aware of the aforementioned concerns regarding Livni.2>CAIRO COURT OUTLAWS HAMAS ACTIVITIES IN EGYPT RELATIONS BETWEEN THE PALESTINIAN ISLAMIST GROUP, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2006, and the Egyptian authorities have soured since the ouster of Muslim Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 El-Sayed Gamal El-Deen, AMRAM ONLINE Tuesday 4 Mar 2014 http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/95825/Egypt/Politics-/BREAKING-Cairo-court-outlaws-Hamas-activities-in-E.aspxThe Cairo Court for Urgent Matters has outlawed all activities in Egypt by Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist organisation, and ordered the sequestration of its offices in Cairo. The relationship between the group, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2006, and the Egyptian authorities has soured since the ouster of Muslim Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.Egyptian officials have accused Hamas of providing support to Islamic militants who have increased their attacks on security forces in the Sinai Peninsula
