2225Dignity denied; LGBT immigrants abused at record numbers
- Dec 3, 2013----Forwarded message----
There are many reasons we need comprehensive immigration reform -- from providing a pathway to citizenship to undocumented immigrants to bolstering the economy.
Another reason is to protect some of the most vulnerable immigrants -- the LGBT community. LGBT immigrants in detention centers are far more likely to be subjected to abuse, according to a new report titled "Dignity Denied" from the Center for American Progress.
In fact, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment found the treatment of LGBT immigrants in detention facilities in violation of the Convention Against Torture.
CAP found 200 reports of abuse from LGBT detainees over the past five years. The true number of instances was likely much higher since many detainees don't file complaints for fear of being deported. Further, ICE does not track sexual orientation or identity, so the 200 reports that turned up were only the ones that mentioned whether the victim is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.
The complaints included "sexual assault by guards and fellow detainees, withholding of medical treatment, verbal and physical abuse by guards and fellow detainees, and the use of solitary confinement based solely on the sexual orientation or gender identity of the immigrant."
We cannot stand for this.

We need whatever solution finally makes it way out of Congress to address this injustice in the immigration system. If Immigration and Customs Enforcement won't act, lawmakers must.
