      RC&D Focused on Project Planning

The Northeast Nebraska Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council met August 26th to make plans for upcoming projects designed to educate and serve citizens of the region.  President Dennis Wacker led the meeting.

The RC&D 20th Anniversary Affair will be September 22nd in Plainview’s school auditorium with headliner Nebraska’s Homegrown Humorist and Cowboy Poet R. P. Smith.  R.P.'s material is inspired by his family and what's going on at the ranch, giving his work a down-to-earth quality that strikes a familiar chord with his audiences, regardless of their occupation.  Local talent will perform and RC&D projects will be highlighted as well.

Household hazardous waste collections are being planned for September 12th in Neligh from 9 – 11 a.m. at their compactor/recycling station and 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. in Plainview at the RC&D parking lot; on the 13th in Wayne at their transfer station/recycling center from 9 – 11 a.m.  For information on the types of items being accepted, please call the RC&D office at 402-582-4866.

The Northeast Nebraska Weed Management Area had a successful educational event on August 21st in Niobrara for landowners and agency representatives.  Plans were made for searching out and destroying Salt cedar plants on Missouri River sandbars and shoreline.  Soon an aerial survey will be made of the major rivers within the RC&D area for the purpose of identifying infestations of noxious weeds that can then be targeted for control.

The Northeast Nebraska Educational Water Tour on October 3rd is filling up fast.  This has been approved for 8 hours of continuing education units (CEUs) for water well professionals and 4 hours for water operators I, II, III, and IV.  The RC&D is working in cooperation with Nebraska Well Drillers Association, Lower Elkhorn and Lewis & Clark NRDs on this project.

A cemetery tour in Dixon and Wayne counties is scheduled for September 28th.  The tour begins in Wakefield at 8 a.m. and returns by 4:30 p.m.   Brad Kellogg, local historian and step-on guide, will lead participants through historic cemetery and forgotten burial sites while sharing stories of mayhem, murder and more.  Reservations are needed and seating is limited.

The next RC&D meeting will be Monday, September 23rd at 7:30 p.m. in Plainview at the RC&D office.    Participation by the public is welcome and encouraged.

      END

Northeast Nebraska RC&D Hears of Farm-to-School Program

The Northeast Nebraska Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council met March 24th at the Winside Public Library.  Caryl Guisinger, Center for Rural Affairs Farm-to-School Fellow, shared information on this program’s progression around the country.  Nebraska is one of only seven states without a farm-to-school program.  Caryl said that 1/3 of US children under age 17 are overweight and only 2% of US children eat sufficient fruits and vegetables.

Farm-to-School programs are seeing many gains through improved K-12 academic achievement, fewer behavioral issues, and improved diets.  Participating farmers have seen a 5% increase in income, new opportunities for diversity, and they’ve developed positive connections with students.  Communities are seeing it as a win-win for everyone.  The RC&D Council voted to start a Farm-to-School project and will be seeking input from citizens and schools.

Document Shredding of sensitive materials will be offered on May 8th at the Orchard Public Library, Plainview’s Midwest Bank, and Creighton’s Midwest Bank.  On May 9th the service will be provided in Ponca at the Co-op, Hartington at the Lewis & Clark NRD office, and in Wayne at the Courthouse.  Security Shredding of Laurel will be the contractor.

A Grant Writing Workshop is scheduled for Thursday, April 17th from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Serendipity Restaurant in Plainview.  Six state agencies and organizations will be sharing information on how to be successful in securing their grants.  Registrations are due by April 10th.

Recycling of electronics will be offered soon and Recycletronics from Sioux City will again be the contractor.  Locations will be in Tilden, Hartington, Creighton, and Plainview.  Dates are yet to be determined so watch for more information.

Free radon test kits are still available at the RC&D office.

For more information about any of the RC&D programs or services please contact the office at 402-582-4866 or email northeastrcd@....
