Welcome to new members
- Hi Everyone,
As some of you may know, the NAMA Cultivation Committee has been
dormant for a while. I agreed to chair the committee with the hope of
reviving it. I hope this cultivation user group will be a step in
This group is open to NAMA members as well as members of affiliated
clubs. If you don't already belong to NAMA, I encourage you to
join and support this fine organization, which does so much to
promote amateur mycology.
As far as I know, no one has any idea about how many mycology club
members are doing mushroom cultivation or how much interest there is
in this fascinating activity; so when you join this group please
introduce yourself and let us know what mushrooms you are
cultivating, your level of cultivation experience, and what
information you would like to see on this site.
Please check out the file and photo features of this web site. These
features make it possible to upload text, articles, and photos to
share with others. It would be interesting and helpful to see photos
of your growing operations and the fruiting bodies of your labors.
I will start the ball rolling by letting you know about my mushroom
cultivation experience. I am actually a novice at this activity
myself, but I am hooked on it, and want to learn more and grow more.
I have grown oysters and shitakes from kits and grown Stropharia on
wood chips in my backyard. My attempt to grow blewits outdoors
failed. I have been experimenting with growing oysters on coffee
grounds with peroxide. I was able to clone and fruit some oysters
without using sterile technique (I'll post a photo in the photo
section), but I have had quite a few losses due to green mold
(Trichoderma) contamination. I have had mixed results growing
oysters on coca hulls as substrate. I recently bought pressure cooker
on e-bay and plan to build a glove box. I also found a "mini
greenhouse" with three shelves and plastic cover, to use as a
OK, that's where I'm at with my cultivation. I hope to hear
other cultivators or potential cultivators out there.
