“Employment makes us equal." campaign in Spain

More than half a million Roma of working age live in Spain, however the number entering the labour market remains low and 55% report that they have suffered discrimination when looking for a job. Spanish organisation, Fundación Secretariado Gitano, has launched an awareness-raising campaign, featuring TV advertisements, posters and brochures, to highlight the prejudices that still exist and which make it difficult for the Roma to access employment.

The Fundación has extensive knowledge of this issue as it has run the ‘Acceder‘ programme which promotes the inclusion of the Roma in the labour market since 2000. Funded by the European Social Fund and the Spanish government, the programme has helped more than 35,000 people and resulted in 26,000 Roma finding jobs. This success has been thanks to the programme’s work to change the attitudes of Roma families, business and society in general, create networks of cooperation with administrations and companies, and help stakeholders develop active policies to promote inclusion.

The Fundación Secretariado Gitano is a not-for-profit organisation which provides services for the development of the Roma community in Spain and in Europe. It works to promote the integration of the Roma community while respecting its unique cultural identity.
