Group Description

MovieTrains ... aka Movie Trains ... is a celebration of the use of trains in movies. A place to ask and answer questions such as "What train was used in the movie _____?" or "My favorite train movie of all time is _____." or "Did you see the scene in the movie ___ where they show the interior of a Pullman car in the 50's?".
There is a long tradition of the use of trains by Hollywood. Even so far as to have produced dozens of films where train travel or use is the 'center' that the movie rotates around.
Many locomotives and/or trains were used over and over. There were even small companies formed around a particular locomotive for the express purpose of its use in films. "A little bit of paint and this will be the train for this movie." The trains themselves even became "actors" and "stars" in some of the movies! Although there were exceptions to the rule, in general Hollywood did not "own" the trains but contracted for their use. However, the Hollywood studios (and others) do have lots of RR equipment that they own for studio shots. And some of them have been heavily modified to be a set by doing such things as removing the side of the car.
