At the Libertarian Moms group over at CafeMom, I posted this same
question for our "Question of the Week". Thought I'd post the gist
of that conversation and hopefully spark some dialogue here...
Several moms expressed their concern about donating to large national
and/or international charities and prefer supporting local charities.
Some of the concerns addressed regarding larger charities had to do
with individuals having little input and/or oversight into how large
charities determine who they support, how those funds are dispersed
and what proportions of the donations actually reach the targeted
recipients. Couldn't help but notice how our libertarian viewpoint
on government was also reflected in this discussion (federal vs.
state vs. individual and the benefits of keeping things local!)
Some moms said they gave to local charities year round and were not
just inspired to do so during the holiday season. Dropping off
clothes/items at thrift stores who donate their profits to local
charitable organizations, contributions to coat drives, donating
aluminum cans to charitable organizations for recycling/funding were
all a part of the mix.
One family planned/participated in a local charity event which had
special significance to a family member's life and passing.
Freecycle was mentioned too ... giving away items to others in your
area as opposed to selling those items on ebay or having a yard sell.
I loved that new(er) idea!
Some specific charities that were mentioned included a local
Pregnancy Crisis Center, Big Brother/Big Sister, and an individual's
Hope these ideas will encourage some conversation here about our
traditional giving and new approaches as well!

someone asks me for change, for instance, and I have some, I give it to
them. I always buy a Street Roots whenever I see a vendor (that's the
local homeless newspaper, with the homeless vendors receiving a big part
of the $1 price). I generally have food in the car, in my backpack or
purse, and give it away when the occasion arises. I contributed to the
local organization which provides Thanksgiving dinners to the homeless.
I am much more likely to be charitable in these ways than to send money
to a large organization.
Our homeschool group did a fun thing this year. At our regular
gathering time, we all brought stuff (toys, clothes, books, etc.) we
were done with. Each child chose one or two things from the pile, and
the rest was taken to the Share House, a local shelter for women and
children in transition.
All the kids in our group went home happy, and there was still a LOT of
stuff to take to the Share House!

My husband (the "breadwinner" here) doesn't feel comfortable AT ALL donating money to the larger organizations though. He feels that too much of the money gets lost in beaurocracy - and that's in the ones you can trust to be doing the right thing with your cash.So we give locally (food pantry) and both of us feel really comfortable with that.
