Group Description

Montana Lyme Support is a virtual meeting place and source for information and emotional support for people with Lyme and other tick-borne diseases in living in Montana. *Please note: the moderator of this group caught Lyme in Montana!!!

According to CDC surveillance statistics, Montana is the only state in the US with no reported cases of Lyme disease. Reports will not be counted until the local public health officer conducts studies to determine the source of the infection (Administrative Rules of Montana 37.114.551)
The Montana Public Health Dept. is investigating reports a Lyme-like disease occurring after people are bitten by Rocky Mountain wood ticks. Anyone who finds an embedded tick should remove it carefully, drop it into a plastic bag, and promptly take it to the county health department. You may be able to participate in the research study to find out more about this disease. Anyone developing a rash at the site of a tick bite within 7 to 21 days after removing the tick should visit a healthcare provider knowledgeable about Lyme disease. The national LDA has a doctor referral service on their website (see links).
Ticks in Montana may carry Colorado tick fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, tick-borne relapsing fever by Borrelia hermsii, and a Lyme-like illness. Lyme ticks are the size of a poppy-seed. If the tick that bites you is infected, it can inject Lyme bacteria into your bloodstream within hours of attachment (less than 6 hours has been reported). If you don't notice the tick, infection will occur in almost 100%. The bacteria invade your brain in less than 24 hours. Lyme disease is under-diagnosed, under-treated, and under-reported.
