WARSAW, Poland - An official says the death toll from an underground explosion at a Polish coal mine in mid-September has risen to 19.

Mariusz Nowak, director of a burn treatment center in the southern city of Siemianowice Slaskie, said that a 47-year-old miner died on Tuesday.

He said Wednesday that there are still 23 other badly injured miners being treated.

The Sept. 18 explosion was caused by a methane leak at the Wujek-Slask mine in Ruda Slaska. Twelve miners were killed immediately and the death toll has risen steadily since then as injured miners have succumbed to burns.

      Authorities are investigating the accident.
