The governor of Utah said Friday underground rescue efforts at the site of a collapsed mine should stop following a collapse that killed three rescuers.
Gov. John Huntsman said the best information coming from the Crandall Canyon Mine was from operations outside the mine, where a fourth bore hole was being drilled in an effort to locate six miners.
The miners have been missing since the collapse Aug. 6, the Deseret Morning News in Salt Lake City reported.
Huntsman said he would oppose further underground efforts to reach the miners unless rescuers' safety could be guaranteed by the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration.
The governor said the three rescue workers killed and six who were injured in Thursday's accident were heroes.
"Let's focus like never before (on workplace safety)," he said in the Morning News report. "If we learn no lessons at all, this will have been in vain and that is unacceptable."___________________________________________________________
