Beijing, May 02: Fifteen workers are feared dead after a graphite mine was flooded in central China, officials said today.

The flood on Tuesday at the unlicensed Jicai graphite mine in Chenzhou city, Hunan province, trapped 18 miners.

Zeng Peng, an official at the Hunan coalmine work safety monitoring bureau, said three workers had been rescued but hope was fading for the 15 still trapped.

More than 60 rescue workers were at the scene, he said.

Chinese mines have an appalling safety record, and the number of mining deaths last year reached 14,924, according to the work safety bureau.
