Man who shot ailing wife, self in Ft. Sheridan cemetery is identified

      Tribune staff report
      May 16, 2009

A man who authorities say killed himself and his seriously ill wife at the Ft. Sheridan Cemetery was identified Friday as James Stein, 73, of Highland Park.

Stein and his wife, Frieda, 72, lived on Patten Road and left behind suicide notes, Lake County Coroner Richard Keller said.

"The wife wrote a fairly extensive note explaining that she had stomach cancer, that she was failing and that she was in a lot of pain and she didn't want to fight it anymore," Keller said. "He wrote a note saying that he couldn't live without her."

A caretaker at the cemetery heard two shots around noon Thursday and notified police, said Chief John Tannahill of the Lake County Forest Preserve Ranger Police. They were pronounced dead at the cemetery at 1:26 p.m., officials said.
