      Subject: Pennsylvania

On this day in 1681 King Charles of England granted a charter to William Penn for land that later became the province of Pennsylvania.

This was not done out of kindness, it was in payment of a huge debt to Admiral Lord Penn who had financed King Charles regime. Admiral is said to have been the wealthiest person in all of the U.K. due to his being the chief admiral of the British Navy and who received a percentage of the bounties of all of the ships and treasures sized by the British Navy during the various wars of that period of time. So when Admiral Penn died, his son William became Lord William Penn and his heir and King Charles had to fork up the money he owed, but of course didn't have.So he gave him some of his new lands in America as payment

Pennsylvania did not prove to a very profitable occupation for the Penn's. The three sons of William Penn spent their entire lifetimes trying to collect payments due for the land that our settlers settled on. The longest holdouts were in the area called the Manor of Maske (named after Wm. Penn's uncle estate in Ireland) and a  area just east of Chambersburg towards Gettysburg. Finally some years after the war of 1812 the grandchildren of William Penn finally collected the money due them and sailed home to England.

                                                                Happy birthday Pennsylvania
