      Fresh From the Bottle

Rex and Goliath (THE HOUSE WINE OF THE MONTH AT

      THE WOLFE HOME)

At the turn of the 20th Century HRM (His Royal Majesty) Rex Goliath was the treasured attraction of a Texas Circus.  People came from far and wide to behold the 47 lb bird, billed as the "World's Largest Rooster". This label replicates the one of a kind, vintage artwork from the circus banner that hung above Rex's roost and they proudly honor HRM with their premium varietal wines. HRM Rex Goliath premium varietal wines from California's treasured coastal vineyards are regarded with that same attraction!

Rex and Goliath CHARDONNAY  $87.48 case

Wow. A rich, ripe, and tropical Monterey chardonnay!  Pretty toasted oak wrapped around layers of pineapple, pear, and citrus. Lengthy, round, and creamy aftertaste that lingers well into the next sip. A solid core of acidity and a seamless wine from start to finish. Great as a companion

to a dinner of salmon or a rich pasta like Fettuccini Alfredo.

Rex and Goliath Cabernet Sauvignon  $87.48 case

This is a hearty Cabernet Sauvignon with structure and concentration. Dark and intense in color. Hints of cedar and oak, with layers of raspberry, plum, mocha, and currant. Firm tannins with big fruit flavors lead to a lengthy and persistent finish. This is the ultimate hamburger wine.

ST. VALENTINES DAY Don’t get caught with out something for that special one in your life.  The new vintage of Bigaro from Elio Perrone will be here!  This is a great wine for love.  Moscato di Asti blended with Brachetto to make a lovely aperitif or dessert wine with a beautiful hue of roses.  The wine is slightly sparkling and is full of fruit, like a bowl full of really ripe raspberries and nectarines.  Sure to make the one you love very happy.

Value of the Month: Las Rocas de San Alejandro, Calatayud, 2002

The last palate of this amazing value just arrived and we will not get any more of this vintage. The next time we see this it will be the 2003 vintage.  Anyway outside of Castle Rock this was hands down the wine of the year at the shoppe. “The 2002 Garnacha is fashioned from 75-year old Grenache vines planted on pure slate. Sixty percent was aged in tank, and 40% in neutral wood foudres. There are 20,000 cases of this offering, which may be the greatest wine value I have ever tasted. Deep ruby/purple-colored, with a gorgeous nose of kirsch liqueur intermixed with melted licorice and white flowers, this deep, medium to full-bodied, fruit-driven, sumptuously-textured 2002 is loaded. It should drink well for 3-4 years, possibly longer. “ 91 pts Robert Parker
        $10.99

Back in the Shoppe: Justin Cabernet Sauvignon, 2002

Bright cherry, blackberry, and a hint of caramel make up the nose of this wine. A soft entry composed of elegant fruit leads into a fleshy, round mid palate. The finish combines slight toasty flavors with a rich, round finish.  This was a “flyer” last year.  Yes it flew out the door and the 2002 is supposed to be a better bottle of wine.

New Find of the Month :  Le Paradou Cotes du Luberon, 2003

The cuvée is created exclusively from estate-grown fruit and sees no wood before bottling to ensure that the vibrancy of the fruit of this area shines through.  After a pre-crush triage, the wine ferments and rests in tank until April/May of the following year.  The Grenache in this cuvée conjures up the deep, dark fruit aromas of areas such as Rasteau and the Cotes du Ventoux while the spicy Syrah adds another layer of complexity to this mouth-filling red.  $12.69

        The “Acid Revolution”

Jon-David Selections of the Loire Valley and Cotes du Luberon

        at Wolfe’s Wine Shoppe

Jon-David Headrick Selections is a national importer of small-production, artisanal wines from

France, principally from the Loire Valley. The wines of the portfolio are selected by

Jon-David and imported by European Cellars/Eric Solomon Selections, one of America’s

preeminent importers of fine French, Spanish, and Portugese wines.

In selecting properties for the portfolio, JD seeks purity first, eschewing heavy-handed usage of oak and opting instead for wines of excellent ripeness, minerality, and above all, balance.  The presence of balanced acidity is absolutely crucial in his view to world-class wine, and he’s not afraid to represent wines that have startling acidity if there is fruit to support it.

Wines to be tasted: Muscadet de la Fruitiere “Petit M”, 2003,  Domaine St. Nicolas, 2003,

La Craie Vouvray, 2003, Domaine du Viking 2002,  Domaine Ogereau Coteaux Layon, 202,

        Collectables: CLARENDON HILLS

“Few can match owner-winemaker Roman Bratasiuk's touch with Grenache, and his Shiraz can compete at the A-grade level. The 2003 vintage ranks among his best, but there's a catch. A change in importers has resulted in a huge price jump at a time when other Aussie producers are trying to keep prices more in line.”  Harvey Steinman of Wine Spectator wrote.

Well, have a look at our prices, we bought on presale and Wolfe’s has some of the most aggressive pricing in the area.  Roman’s agenda to produce wines of extraordinary depth and power has not weaned at all with the 2003’s

The wine is slightly sweet to offset the tannins, but not too sweet. Great with Asian style duck in a soy fruit sauce! Grab some before they are all gone or your sleeping in the dog house!

Value of the Month:  Quinta do Ameal , Portugal 2005

The color is very light… like a young Riesling. It’s light to medium-bodied The nose is lightly floral and citrus-y. The flavor is lightly fruity, peachy followed by crisp citrus acidity with a mineral edge. It’s much like a Viognier that has been crossed with Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon with a dash of Riesling. It all adds up to a mouthful of tastiness. Fantastic with seafood!

Back in the ShoppeBetts & Scholl “The O.G.” Grenache, Barossa 2005

From our friends Richard, Denis and Debra (Who by the by are the ink blot figures in the new Shiraz “Black Betty ” comes the new Grenache which is outstanding.

Dark red. Expansive, seductive bouquet of red berry liqueur, candied licorice and Asian spices. A suave, silky midweight, with vibrant but sweet red berry flavors, gentle tannins and a bright jolt of minerals on the back. Fresh, juicy and drinking well now, this will be a real crowd-pleaser right out of the gate

New Find of the Month :  Chappellet Mountain Cuvee, Napa 2005

Vibrant  aromas  of  blackberry,  black  cherry,  dried  fruit,  and  baking  spices  jump from  the  glass.  In  the  mouth  the  wine  is  rich  in  dark  fruit  flavors,  with  hints  of  mocha  and  roasted  coffee  beans.  Full,  fairly  big  tannins  are  well  integrated  in  the  body  and  fruit  character.   Cabernet  Sauvignon  57%   Merlot  41%  Petit  Verdot  2%

          PINOT NOIRS

          at Wolfe’s Wine Shoppe

Great Pinot Noir creates a lasting impression on the palate and in the memory. Its aroma is often one of the most complex of all varietals and can be intense with a ripe-grape or black cherry aroma, frequently accented by a pronounced spiciness that suggests cinnamon, sassafras, or mint. Ripe tomato, mushroom, and barnyard are also common descriptors for identifying Pinot Noir. It is full-bodied and rich but not heavy, high in alcohol, yet neither acidic nor tannic, with substantial flavor despite its delicacy. The most appealing quality of Pinot Noir may be its soft, velvety texture. When right, it is like liquid silk, gently caressing the palate. Pinot does not have the longevity in the bottle of the darker red wines and tends to reach its peak at five to eight years past the vintage.

$25 Gets you in and Riedel glass to go home with and a $10 credit towards a purchase that night , please call or E-mail to RSVP.  $50 at the door.
