Summer is here and with it comes Hurricane season. As we all know, one of the essential items on your preparedness list is WINE. So to help you stock up, this week we have a nice selection of South African wines, including the region’s signature Pinotage. Come to relax, enjoy good company and put your storm worries aside!

      Migration, Sauvignon Blanc 2001

Fresh, crisp with typical green fig character on both nose and palate, this wine is elegant, yet deceptively rich, with a mouthwatering and long finish.

      Migration, Shiraz 2000

A deep colored wine with typical herbal and plumb pudding nuances. Spicy on the nose with soft, well integrated tannins on the palate.

      Graham Beck, Shiraz 2001

This wine has ripe mulberry and white pepper on the nose, with layers of fruit, rich tannins and oak complexity on the palate.

      Boschkloof, Cabernet Reserve 1999

This Cabernet and Merlot blend offers dried berry and currant fruit and firm coffee and toast notes, with hints of cedar and prunes on a firm finish.

      Migration, Pinotage 2001

This is an outstanding example of South Africa’s signature grape. A flamboyant red wine showing off a soft hint of wood maturation perfectly balance with prominent fruit flavors.

      Migration, Pinotage Rose 2003

An off dry, soft, delicate, charming white Pinotage with typical onion skin color and elegant fruit on the palate, that is perfect for enjoying all year round.

We are having an Italian night this week and are going to explore the tastes of two of Italy’s main grapes, Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese. Come, enjoy and relax with good wine and great company.

        Zenato, Pinot Grigio 2003

Fabulous value here. This is super clean, with apple, honey and pineapple character. Medium-bodied, with good acidity and a long finish.

        Villa Ruzzis, Pinot Grigio 2001

Straw yellow, exhibits finesse and elegance and at the same time, structure and roundness. Rich flavor with complex nuances of apples and pears and a long, lingering finish. In time, it develops an ample bouquet of dry hay and toasted almonds.

        Di Majo Norante, Sangiovese 2002

Why drink cheap Chianti, when you have this? Blackberry, chocolate and minerals, with hints of bark. Medium-bodied, with lovely clean fruit and a crisp, clean finish. Delicious.

        Villa Cafaggio, Chianti Classico, 2001

This wine is rich and elegant, with notes of ripe black fruit and damson, and a chestnut and mineral edge. Medium-bodied with supple tannins and a long spicy finish. Delicious.

        Falesco, Vitano 2003

There's a lovely softness and richness to this medium- to full-bodied red, with round and caressing tannins, and a long chocolate and meaty finish. A fantastic bottle for the money.

        Di Majo Norante, Ramitello 2000

Fantastic aromas of ripe fruit and licorice, with hints of violets and berries. Full-bodied, with silky and beautiful tannins and a long, delicious finish. A beauty.

Okay, you are allowed to drink a cold beer while barbequing, or while you watch someone else do it. But, when you sit down to eat all those hamburgers, ribs, steaks and churrasco, it’s time for cabs and more cabs. So, we have selected 6 wonderful cabernets for this tasting. Come, enjoy and relax with good wine and great company.

          Araucano, Colchagua Cabernet 2002

This very elegant cabernet has red berry, floral, mineral and vanilla notes on a supple, easy texture, and ends in a sweet stylish finish.

          Terra Rosa, Mendoza Cabernet 2001

Particularly spicy, perfumed with notes of dark mulberries and fully ripened black fruits.  It has a long finish that displays a haunting interplay of power and finesse.

          Morande Terrarum, Cabernet Reserve 2002

Deep red in color with hints of violet.  Its fragrance recalls blueberry, wild strawberries and toasted tobacco.  It is powerful to the taste and lingering touches of vanilla and truffles.

L de Lyeth, Sonoma Cabernet 2001

Crimson red.  Delicious, complex hints of plum cherry, blackberry and truffle.  Rich and concentrated with layers of juicy plum, black currant and coffee nuances.  It finishes with polished tannins allowing the ripe fruit flavors to show through.

          Pascual Toso, Mendoza Cabernet 2002

Nice focus blackberry, bramble and brier notes with dark chocolate and judicious toast on the finish.  Fleshy and well built.

          Peter Lehman, Barossa Cabernet 2001

A polished, refined Cabernet, nicely fleshed out with currant and plum fruit, shaded with hints of white pepper and cream as the finish lingers.

This wine is concentrated and youthful, with chunky blackberry, cherry and plum tones, highlighted by generous toasty oak and modest tannins.

This Merlot boasts a deep purple color and enticing aromas of blueberry, currant and spice. The palate offers flavors of dark juicy plums with a backdrop of sweet vanilla followed by round, luxurious tannins.

Clos Du Bois, Sonoma County Merlot 2000

This Merlot is smooth and easy to drink, with rich fruit flavors and a nice touch of toasty vanilla oak complexity. The wine displays soft and well balance tannins.

What a day for a tasting, Friday the 13th, and on top of it, is the opening day for the Olympics. So, in the spirit of the moment we are going to have a wrestling match; The Art of Wine Circle of Friends vs. 6 wonderful Malbecs. Malbec is the signature grape of Argentina , from which full bodied, fruitful and delicious wines are made. But tonight the Argentineans will compete with an up and coming rare find from South Africa . Come for relaxation and fun in a great setting and with the very best company!

Dark cherry, plum and cassis fruit races along here, with plenty of chocolate and loam. Nice, rich, smoky finish shows grip, while the fruit lingers.

                Antis, Mendoza Malbec 2003

The first act is a smooth and luscious nose of blueberry jam and spice. The palate then delivers richness and loads of bursting berry fruit, ending in a soft finish.

                Umkhulu, Stellenbosch Malbec 2001

Diamond Oaks, Pinot Noir, Carneros 2002

With deep notes of plum and black cherry rounded by hints of hazelnut, vanilla and nutmeg it’s a true Burgundian style Pinot Noir. It is elegant with lush cherry flavors, enriched by subtle hints of vanilla and spice.

                  Schug, Pinot Noir, Sonoma 2001

This is a soft, silky Pinot Noir with red cherry, red currant and baked apple flavors, picking up herbal notes, vanilla and gentle structure on the finish.

Frei Brothers, Pinot Noir Reserve, Russian River 2002

This Pinot Noir possesses a fruit-forward character with intense aromas and flavors that reflect the land and the climate that created the grapes. A medium to full-bodied wine bursts with pure flavors and aromas of rose petal, black cherry, and raspberry delicately balanced with sweet vanilla notes and soft tannins.

Laetitia Estate, Pinot Noir, Arroyo Grande 2001

This is a medium bodied Pinot Noir with rich aromas of plum and spice mixed with hints of clove and cedar to accent the nose. The black cherry notes on the palate are framed by velvety tannins that give the wine a nice depth. The finish is long and smooth with a richness that leaves you wanting more.

Tin House, Pinot Noir, Edna Valley 2000

Medium-deep ruby purples color; spicy, cumin with a touch of red cherry and berry on nose; rich, ripe fruit, some tannin and toasty oak, red cherry and plum flavors with spicy notes on palate; balanced with a long finish. ...deep, complex flavors with just the right amount of oak.

Russian Hill, Pinot Noir, Russian River 2000

A luxurious Pinot noir with bright, forward fruit flavors of raspberry and cranberry interlaced with truffle, cedar, toffee, and spice tones. The extraordinarily long finish is of cherry and vanilla. A touch of oak and well integrated tannins complete the profile.

Syrah or Shiraz ! No matter how you call it, this grape produces wonderful medium to full-bodied, fruitful wines that are becoming the world’s hottest. For this occasion we have a six pack from California , Australia and South Africa that will make you forget the stress of Frances , and not worry about Ivan. Come for relaxation and fun in a great setting and with the very best company!

McWilliams Hanwood Estate, Australia Shiraz 2002

This wine is vibrant crimson in color, with layers of plum and raspberry fruit flavors. The use of oak delivers subtle vanilla overtones with a hint of spice on the finish.

Graham Beck, South Africa Shiraz 2001

This shiraz displays ripe mulberry and white pepper on the nose with layers of fruit, rich tannins and oak complexity on the palate.

                    Bogle, California Petite Syrah 2002

Amazingly inky and deep purple color. On the nose, luscious boysenberry scents mingle with traces of cedar and black pepper. Firm tannins and notes of ripe fruit and berries fill the mouth. The voluptuous finish lingers with toasty, vanilla oak and lush fruit.

                    Jepson, Mendocino Syrah 2001

Blueberry and wild plum are the overwhelming aromas in our Syrah. Ripe flavors of blackberry, tree bark and melting chocolate occur in forward flavors, with mid-tones of coffee bean, dill and smoke. The finish shows medium tannins with a hint of leather and plums.

                    Woop Woop, Australia Shiraz 2003

Its black cherry in color and thick legs leads into predominantly candied red cherry along with some spice and earth notes. On the palate, is medium-bodied and dry, and delivers plenty of cherry and wild-mushroom flavors. It's nicely structured, with good concentration, acidity, and supple tannins. It finishes nicely with tobacco and tart plums.

D’Arenberg The Footbolt, Australia Shiraz 2001

A deep red-purple color introduces hallmarks of spicy, lifted ripe peppery mulberry and blackberry fruit aromas. The palate is consistently well structured with terrific fruit and totally integrated oak tannin providing great texture to support plum, blackcurrant and rolling blackberry flavors, especially on the mid-palate. This is followed by a traditional, long, velvety, fine grained tannin finish.

From Casa Boher we’ll taste a Malbec, a Sauvignon Blanc and a Tempranillo that offer a great combination of quality and value. Casa Boher, Sauvignon Blanc 2003

It is pale yellow in color with touches of green, characteristic of this variety. You can find tropical fruit aromas in which the citric, pineapple, banana and coconut are predominant. We also find white peach, rue and touches of butter. The palate repeats what the nose perceives, filling the mouth with a remarkable structure and fruity flavors. Its delicate tannins are well balanced with the alcohol and acidity.

                        Casa Boher, Tempranillo 2003

This wine is deep ruby red with hints of intense violet. Fruit aromas of mulberry, cherry and strawberry stand out. You can also perceive wild flowers, blackberry and red currant. In the palate we once again find hints of fruit added to a very good and balanced tannic structure.

                        Nieto Senetiner, Don Nicanor 2002

It's a wine of a very neat profile and purple red color with violate and bluish hues. Red fruits and prunes are the dominant aromas that together with the smoked scents delivered by the French oak barrels add complexity to the wine. In mouth it has a great personality, good body and structure.

                        Casa Boher, Malbec 2003

It is cherry red in color, with intense violet, almost black, hues. Defined aromas of red fruit, prunes and raspberry as well as marmalade stewed fruit and tobacco. To the palate its good tannic structure balances well with the alcohol and acidity giving it a full bodied sensation. We can also find flavors of dried fruits, liquorices and chocolate.

                        Nieto Senetiner, Bonarda Reserva 2002

The color is deep cherry red with black tones. On the nose aromas of smoked wood, truffles and tobacco subtly combine with red berries typical of this variety. On the palate the wine is complex and well structure, with soft ripe tannins.

                        Nieto Senetiner, Cadus Malbec 2001

Cadus is made with 100% Malbec from 80 years old vines and aged for 18 months in new French oak. It shows a very intense violate color, limpid and brilliant. The dominant aromas are black currants, ripe figs, prunes and chocolate. In mouth is frank, with a great personality, strong, full-bodied, persistent and harmonious.

Peach and floral notes are alluring in this round white, with apple flavors and a rich silky texture. Crisp acidity gives it backbone.

Bright honeysuckle and jasmine jump out of the glass into a rich, fleshy mouth-feel. Flavors of pineapple, pear and ripe apricot create a fruit medley of tropical-laced essence.

                              Dardano, Dolcetto D’Alba 2001

This dry, light to medium-bodied red has a rich, purple to ruby hue with crisp grapery fragrance, a noble harmonious taste and pleasant finish.

                              Tierra Salvaje, Monastrell 2001

This full-bodied red is complex in character, round and velvety in style with hints of vanilla, distinctive balsamic and blackberry flavors.

                              Dominio de Tares, Mencia 2001

This dark red impresses with its solid structure and good balance. The flavors are muted now, but the concentration is evident, and a core of wild plum and toast notes will open with time.

                              Allegrini, Palazzo Della Torre 2000

Lots of black fruit, violet and mineral character. Full-bodied, with densely packed fruit on a rounded, expansive palate, with integrated tannins and a long fruity, mineral finish.
