164Francisco Cantu aka Canales aka Leal born 3/5/1897 in China Nuevo Leon,Mexico
- Jul 1, 2013Hi Gary,I have been reading with great interest many of the letters that you are receiving. I have many comments of course but for the moment I have a request, Would you please post my uncles markers and information on your site (Francisco Cantu born in China, Nuevo Leon, Mexico on 3/5/1897 ). I had his son Ramon Cantu's YDNA done by Family tree and received the results about 2 weeks ago. My uncle Francisco Cantu married my mothers sister Rosa Cantu on 19 Jan 1925 in Pearsall,Frio County, Texas. We do not know who his parents are. At the age of 12 on 10 Aug 1909 He was brought across the border at Laredo, Texas as the son of Miguel Canales. My uncle early on realized that he was not his father. He is recorded as a son in the 1920 census and in 1910 he is recorded as a nephew under the name Francisco Leal. When my uncle married tia Rosa Cantu he decided to use the last name Cantu as his name as well, since the Canales were not being helpful in giving him information about his biological parents.Bottom line we have no idea who his parents really were. Further research indicates that the Canales last name was really Cantu, I give thanks to Cris Rendon for directing me to the correct family.Below is the information so you may access his records at Family Tree DNA for KIT 289894 password is D5251D8A.Thank you Gary for your on going help.DahliaDahlia Guajardo-Cantu de Palacios

Ok. I have joined, as you instructed, for my uncle Elwood Gordon Deras, whose DNA was already on FTDNA.
Hopefully you can now access his results for the project.
It seems for myself, since I did my DNA through Ancestry, that I need to order an Autosomal DNA Transfer at $69 to convert my Ancestry Autosomal RAW results to FTDNA Family Finder results.
Am I correct?
Or can I just send you the Ancestry RAW files somehow?
My grandfather Manuel Martin Velasquez Deras deserted the family, and my grandmother Ruth Packard was institutionalized in Sonoma State Hospital for the Insane for 20 years (1927-47).
Both Manuel and Ruth had syphilis.
Most likely Manuel infected Ruth.
Ruth's progressed to cerebral syphilis, which resulted in insanity.
Manuel's family, mother Ysabel Velasquez and brother Hilario, briefly joined him in San Francisco in 1905, but probably returned to Mexico after the Revolution. There has been mention of another brother: Santiago.
Manuel went so far as to change his name to Frank Blanco to escape his obligations to his children.
Ruth's family pretty much disowned her.
So, even when she was released from the insane asylum in 1947, after the advent of penicillin, which cured her insanity; she never really reunited with her eight surviving siblings or her five surviving children. Seems like everyone fears insanity, even cured insanity.
When I started this quest, I didn't even know Ruth's maiden name, or the names of her parents and siblings.
Nor did I know the names of Manuel's parents or siblings.
It has all been like feeling round in a dark room.
I'm actually pretty proud of myself for learning what I have learned so far.
So here I am, on the verge of another discovery...

anyone can join the project if they have already tested through FTDNA by clicking on their Projects tab and then clicking on Join and locating the project "Mexico DNA".
Anyone that has not tested yet can join our project and get a discount on some testing by clicking on this link:
Have you contacted any of you relatives and if so how close are they? Sometimes you can tell by the surnames of your autosomal matches what expansion they came out of.
You can check the FTDNA chromosome browser for overlapping dna meaning you share a conmon ancestor with two or more matches.
Close matches to a Deras surnamed Ydna family donor should help determine where the line comes from or if there was a name change.
