When a person looks so close at the detail the outcome will normally be that he will miss the whole picture.
As far as these two statements they are used every day by someone and no one cares if someone else used it a hundred years ago, or what ever.
"Mejor morir a pie que vivir en rodillas." (Better to die on one's feet than live on one's knees.)

She also said, "It is better to be the widow of a hero than the wife of a coward."
Both of these come from the Spanish Civil War.
