Re-election still unconfirmed; would contradict earlier reports that Maashal would not run for chief of terrorist organization as he intended to run for PLO presidency.
Khaled Mashaal was re-elected to his fourth term as chairman of Hamas's Political Bureau, according to Arab media outlets BBC in Arabic and Palestinian news agency Ma'an.
The report has not yet been confirmed and Israel Radio reported Monday that there were contrary reports of Maashal's reelection from news sources in Gaza and Cairo and Hamas itself had not responded to the reports.
According to media reports earlier this year Mashaal did not intend to stand for re-election for the chairman position because he was eyeing the presidency of the PLO, currently chaired by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh traveled to Cairo on Saturday to discuss complaints the movement has regarding Israel's compliance with the truce brokered by Egypt following Operation Pillar of Defense, AFP reported.
According to the report, the Hamas administration's spokesman Taher al-Nunu said Haniyeh would be discussing "Israeli violations of the truce."
