[January 13] On Friday, January 12, 2001, PNA Chairman Yasser Arafat ratified
death sentences, delivered by the Palestinian State Security Court, against two
Palestinian citizens convicted of collaborating with Israel and providing information
that enabled Israeli security services to arrest and assassinate a number of
Palestinian activists in the past weeks. This morning, the Palestinian National
Authority executed these sentences. The two were Majdi Mohammed
Ahmed Makkawi, 27 years old, from Rafah, and A’llan Bani Oudeh,
24 years old, from Jenin. Palestinian Civil Rights groups have protested use
of the death sentence. Israeli sources claim that many more such executions
      may take place.
