Nablus - Ma'an - The Al-Aqsa Brigades, the main armed group affiliated with
the Fatah movement have, on Saturday, claimed responsibility for the
abduction of the Dean of Islamic Religion at the An-Najah national
university in the northern West Bank city of Nablus, Dr Khadir Sunduq, aged
      54.

The brigades told Ma'an that the abduction aimed to pressure those who are
besieging the leader of the Al-Aqsa Brigades in the northern Gaza Strip,
Samih Al-Madhoon, into retreating. Al-Madhoon is currently being besieged by
a group of the Hamas-affiliated Executive Force and al-Qassam Brigades, a
nebula of militant groups affiliated to Hamas.

The spokesperson of the Al-Aqsa Brigades, Abu Mahmoud noted that the
abduction in Nablus came shortly after the Executive Force refused to abide
by the ceasefire agreement, when they continued to open fire at the security
service offices and at Fatah members in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian sources told Ma'an that a group of gunmen had obstructed Dr
Sunduq near the campus and took him to an unknown location. Earlier on
Saturday, also in Nablus, gunmen abducted Fayiz Bishtawi, 37, who is
believed to be close to Hamas.
