PNA Arrests Journalist over Execution Film * Palestinian Group Killed Head of Gaza TV
- PNA Arrests Journalist over Execution Film
[19.1.1] The Palestinian preventive security force arrested Majdi al Orabid,
whom it suspects of knowing who filmed the footage of Majdi Mahawi's
execution on Saturday. Segments of the execution were aired on Israel
TV Channel 2. Mahawi was executed as a collaborator.
In Gaza, the Palestinian journalists' association yesterday harshly
criticized the arrest of Orabid and demanded he be freed immediately.
Palestinian security sources said Orabid has not been arrested and is only
being held for questioning.
Only three photographers working for the PNA were allowed to cover the
execution. Reporters and cameramen were barred from the police station where
the execution took place. Palestinian police are trying to find out who
disregarded these orders. Orabid was a TV cameraman during the
first Intifada, and in the September 1996 clashes he was injured by IDF
fire. He owns a Gaza production company.
Meanwhile, Palestinian chairman Yasser Arafat helped to carry the coffin at
the funeral of the slain head of Palestinian state television, Hisham Mikki,
an associate of Arafat's. A Palestinian group, the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade,
said it had killed Mikki on Wednesday because Arafat and the PA were
failing to curb corruption.
