Wednesday's three-way summit in Jordan is expected to conclude with Israel and the Palestinians issuing separate
statements of mutual recognition, a Saudi newspaper reports, quoting a senior Jordanian official.

After the summit in Aqaba, the Palestinians will issue a statement recognizing the state of Israel in principle and its
right to exist in peace within safe borders, denouncing terror, its use against Israel and pledging to disarm
Palestinian militias, the al-Watan paper reports.

In exchange, Israel is expected to issue a formal statement recognizing the right of the Palestinian people to an
independent state, whose final borders will be decided in future negotiations, the newspaper writes.

The report appears to indicate a failure of efforts to arrange for the parties to issue a joint statement after the
summit with US President George W. Bush.
