The problem is not Sharon but the society which produced him
When the Kahan committee to investigate the events of Sabra and Shatila
recommended to remove Sharon from his post as defense minister, and later on
under some pressure had to leave he said: who doesn't want me as defense
minister will accept me as prime minister. 18 years later Sharon fulfilled
his promise. In this period Sharon didn't withdraw from politics, he kept
law profile for a while and then he returned as minister for agriculture,
      and infrastructure, and foreign affairs.
According all international laws somebody like Sharon should be persecuted
as a war criminal before an international tribune. But this never happened,
which says something about the nature of Sharon only, but of the state of
      Israel.
It was wrong to establish the state of Israel in 1948, and it still wrong to
keep it today. The state of Israel as colonialist didn't create the
Palestinian problem only, but also a Jewish problem. The Zionist movement
clamed that Jews of the world are under danger of extermination, the only to
rescue them is to collect them from all the world and give them a homeland.
Now after more than one century of Zionism and more than half century of the
state of Israel, the only unsafe place in the world for Jews is the so
      called the Jewish state, Israel.
Sharon like Barak like other Zionist leaders are the legal children of this
colonialist project. They are different from each others in personalities,
tactics, and many other things, but the so called national consensus unites
all of them. The state of Israel can't continue to exist without the conquer
of the Palestinian land and drive away its people. So the Israeli and the
Palestinians can negotiate for years and sign many agreements, but they can
never reach peace so long this antagonist contradiction between the
colonialist nature of Israel and the Palestinian natives exist.
The victory of Sharon makes this antagonism again clear and simple. I think
that this victory is a sign of weakness and not of strength for Israel,
because when Israel felt strong enough than it allowed to itself to appear
for the world and for its society as a normal civil entity. But now the
whole colonial project feels threatened, and from its own point of view
aggression, more oppression and wars are the only way to exit its impasse.
Sharon will draw Israel, the Palestinian and the whole area back to the
sixties and seventies. This anachronism can lead to a total war.
Only a common struggle of progressive Palestinian and Arab forces to gather
with anti Zionist Jews with the support of progressive international
community can guarantee a jus and comprehensive peace.
