  • 11/14/2012 at the quarry near the W. end of Pudding Creek Haul Road, (Fort Bragg aea) a N.Pygmy Owl was perched atop a small fir tree. • I spent Monday April 16 at the launch ramp below Dolphin Isle on Noyo River, monitoring sport fishing effort. Since that was pretty slow, my work partner and I spent a lot of time birdwatching. Of note were some Loons, which we tentatively identified as Red-throated, based on coloration and slim bills, held pointed slightly upward. Can someone confirm this as likely? The Ospreys...

  • Thursday mid-afternoon a group of around 6 Brown Pelicans came through Van Damme, heading north. Maybe what Jeanne saw? Also, several long straggling Vs of geese, maybe 1000 birds in all passed by, high up just offshore. Becky Stenberg Fort Bragg [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

  • Wow! I just saw my first Rose-breasted Grosbeak, breeding plumage male. He's eating at the nyjer seed feeder right out my window. My Thayer birding program doesn't show them in our area, though I know some of you see them. How common are they? ~~~ Becky Stenberg in Glen Blair

Any ideas as to why? >>Jim Armstrong I'm noticing the same thing here, at least they're not using the feeders. • Just for the record, I have a White -throated sparrow in my hedgerow this morning, 10/29 in GlenBlair. His markings are bright and bold. I'd like to think it's the little fellow who spent last winter here, hoping he'll stay. Becky Stenberg GlenBlair

  • Sunday afternoon 4/12 as I was coming across Hwy 20 I saw a flock of around a dozen White Pelicans circling.I don't know what this area is called, it's between Upper Lake and Blue Lakes, the NW corner of Clearlake where it is flooded at high water and diked fields at low water. Becky Stenberg
